I've been hearing some bad things and good things about this laptop, I want to get this sorted out.

So, What bad things has happened and what is good about this laptop?

Also, are these problems caused due to hardware or software and are they fixable by a person who is computer capable and not an idiot :p?

Easy solution---> buy the y470 or y570. Just a better machine overall. This is the consensus on both this forum and the official lenovo forum. I won't write an extended document in this thread to try and persuade you of this opinion. However, as an honestly poor college student who literally just purchased his lenovo laptop a week ago, my opinion was formed from an entire month of research of which is the best lenovo laptop. I constantly encountered (especially on youtube) that the y560p is terrible.

This. Don't waste your time and your money. The y470 and y570 are known products with a larger following and you know what you're getting. The specs of the machines are nearly the same as well and the y560p does not have switchable graphics.

Simply put the y460p/y560p are cheaply built laptops. Two owners with the exact same horror story here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/580287-updated-lenovo-y460p-data-review.html

Completely disagree with the Y460p build description. I got one back in end of June, it runs like a dream and I have had absolutely no problems with it. Only thing I despise is lack of switchable graphics.

I agree with fubag, i think people are complaining only because of the lack of switchable graphic & screen resolution WHICH IS average for most 15.6" laptops. I ordered my Y560p (8gigs, hdd 750, with $350 discount) and will receive it soon..til then, i'll tell u what's the REAL problems, if there's any. lol
