On battery, the gtx is supposed to clock down to 405mhz. But it should hold it there too.
On my laptop, after running 2 minutes of Furmark, it throttles further to the lowest possible idle speed (135mhz) every 2 seconds.
I just need someone to do a quick test. will only take 5 minutes or less.
You'll need gpu-z and Furmark, or any modern game.
in gpu-z, watch the Sensors tab with the gtx selected. it will show core clock.
then run furmark. Under the settings button, put in 6000000000ms so that it keeps running.
Keep watching the gpu-z sensors tab for a few minutes, and tell me if it fluctuates between 405 and 135mhz and starts stuttering.

you could also use other benchmarks like unigine heaven, but you have to run for at least 5 minutes

I've asked around to see if HP's gt650m and Asus GTX does this, but users say it seems to hold the lower clocks without noticeable throttling like ours.
I'm trying to get this reported to lenovo engineers to see if they can come up with a fix. -
Havent checked with gpuz or any programs, but I can tell that by gaming on battery the gpu is throttling. Gaming while plugged in is whole lot better in performance.

This isn't a bug, its intentionally throttling down because the battery alone cannot supply enough watts to the graphics card. That is why the power MUST be plugged in for the nvidia card to get enough juice to run at full throttle.

The problem here is, the y580 doesn't even hold the 405mhz it was designed to hold on battery. It slams down further to the lowest possible state at 135mhz. That is not normal, according to what Nvidia tech support told me.
How many watts do you think a 405mhz gpu consumes? This is a ~50w card at 950mhz.
The battery is plenty capable of supplying the watts to power a 405mhz core. I know this because using Nvidia Inspector, you can pin the clock to 405mhz and continue to run on battery without issue.
something else to consider- Asus gaming laptops have nvidia optimus disabled, so they run on nvidia gpu all the time, battery or not.
If the battery were not able to power a gpu at half throttle, their laptops would be completely unusable on battery, which is not the case. -

Same here, on battery the frames drops good(which is expected since it goes from 950Mhz to 405Mhz), but the problem is it it can't stay constant and throttles every few seconds

I can also confirm this. I was playing League of Legends and I was surprised my framerates drop from 60 to 20+ then back to 60 then drop again. I thought like is my laptop failing? Then I found out that I was running on battery because I forgot to turn on the power surge.

is there a fix to this? my lenovo y580 would drop to 135mhz while in battery mode when im gaming. if there is a fix, can you do a step by step tutorial in how to do it?

I almost never game with battery power. Heck, I even almost never put the battery because it is always plug in no matter where I go.
I think easiest way is to carry the charger and look for socket if it's feasible (like on campus) -
I don't consider this neither an issue nor a problem. It's the limitation of our current battery tech.
