I am looking to buy a laptop recently, and did my research for it. Now I have a shortlist from which I can make my final decision: IBM z60t/m T42/43 and Fujitsu P7010. Just knew that Fujitsu released P7120, but since Fujitsu P7010/P7120 doesn't have Bluetooth and IR, I have to cross it out. My first laptop was Fujitsu S6010, it ran smoothly for 3+ years and keep running now in my dad's hands. That's why I first looked at Fujitsu instead of IBM this time when I need a new lappy.

anyway, I am looking for one with high resolution, light weight, and provides full connectivities 802.11a/b/g, BT, IR... I am a network engineer, read a lot Visio diagrams (really big ones) and documents. I am a big digital photograph fan too, so I'd like to have my laptop with me on the way of the trip. (yeah, now you know why I looked at :fujitsu: P7010? )

Now the list comes down to z60t/m vs T42/43. I'd like to hear you guys' suggestions. I don't think I will carry this laptop with me on the trip to Yellow Stone or Tibet.. So please just consider it's for business trips and in-home use.

Which one will be the better choice? z60t/m or T42/43? and why?

    Thanks.

    Forgot to mention:
I read all the reviews from this site about z60 and T42/43. I want to know what you guys, as a owner of z60t/m T42/43, don't like on your thinkpad. I think that'll help me a lot. :)

The T42/43 with the Flexview screen is very good if you want to go 15". There is one MaxBright screen offered on the Z series, but I believe it is a WXGA model.

Flexview? the 1600x1200 UXGA? I don't know if everything under this kind of resolution in a 15" LCD will be too tiny for me. so far, my 2001FP Dell on 1600x1200 gives me comfortable view even I am 3 feet away.. but 15"...

Thanks zazonz, Andrew redirected me to here. ;-p thanks for your help.

FlexView is a IPS screen. It offers wider viewining anlges, is brighter with better contrast. It also little bit more battery hungry. The FlexView is on 15" SXGA screens which is what I have. A little easier on the eyes than UXGA. It is a very good screen especially if you do not like glossy screens like myself. By the way. I also have the 2001FP hooked up to the mini dock. It is a good screen. Mine has a little leakage and one dead pixel. One the whole very good, but I still prefer my FlexView. As for my dislikes, no good DVD burners and could use a few more ports.

I second zazonz' dislikes - 2 USB ports is just too little, especially since one fat flash disk can eat up both, due to their non-ideal placement. My DVD burner supports RAM, but not DVD+. Like WTF?

Also: No Windows key is a small minus to me (plus or neutral for some).

actually I have 2 2001FPs standing side by side making up a 3200x1200 desktop space. The setup is for my little CCIE home lab and it's excellent for doing multiple tasks at the same time. Having google page, pdf files, visio files, terminal screens and notepads openning at the same time but not even one pixel overlapping is just like heaven. :p

Back to topic. zazonz you mentioned it has a bad burner, is it true as what dr st said, it just doesn't support DVD+ ? 2 USB port is fine for me, but without the win key... e.....

Now I am looking for some place I can put my hands on one of the T42/43 or z60t/m to have some real feeling.. :) poor central Ohio...

    Thanks guys.

I think there are some burners available for the T series that support DVD+, but they still burn slow and aren't known for great quality either.

Note that it's possible to configure the right Alt or right Ctrl key to function as the Windows key, which makes it a bit less uncomfortable. The Z series have the Windows key, it can be an advantage. But I still like the T series for being thinner, lighter and non-widescreen.

There are two burners which fit the T series the Panasonic UJ-812/822. The 812 does DVD-R and DVD-RAM at 2x. The 822 adds DVD+R. You can only get them from Leveno and ocassionally eBay. They are not very good drives. They are slow, expensive, picky on media and marginal burn quality. An external usb powered one is a better option.
