I just saw one in Hong Kong, and I'm itching for a new laptop with dual core capability. The P1 is selling for about $14000(HK) which is about 1750US....I'm kind of suspicious about the price since its pretty low despite ddr2, x1400 card. Does anyone have any reviews? anything at all? despite the fact that they just came out. Thanks

I've been reading alot about the P1 Express.
The Asian Market and European market both have the worse off P1 Express Specs. WXGA screen, X1400, 512 DDR2 @ 667, 1.6ghz Yonah.
Here in Canada, we can get the Higher Specced P1 Express, the specs are not finalized, but it may have WSXGA+, X1600 128mb, 1gb DDR2 @ 667mhz, 2ghz Yonah. Rough cost is 2300$ CAnadian = 2000$ USD.
Any reviews... well no. But according to the site you can expect 4000 3dmarks05 with the X1600, expect awsome Wireless Connection, Awsome Bluetooth Connect, expect a nice screen (i think its glossy).
It is 1.2" thick at the front and 1.5" thick at the back.
In terms of quietness and coolness we have no clue.
Build Quality, it may just be average... the site does not say if it has CArbon fibre, magnesium or titanium... meaning it could be HARD Plastic.. like those Dell laptops.
Here in Canada, they haven't been released yet.. but this is one laptop I will definately check out.
Released on Feb 21 (around there).
I will go to a store who would carry one on display and make a quick review on the following things.
Get the Specs firstly
Screen quality and Brightness
Built quality and materials
Quietness and Coolness
Check out if it looks thin 1.5" thick in the back
Try to get Battery Life (the LG 17" model got 3 hours 50 mins battery life with 4/8 brightness) - Meaning VERY good
Have an overall opinion YAE or NAY
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
LG laptops are pretty much always a glare type screem.

Here's the link i got my specs from, yes i have checked out Ncix, and CanadaComputers... all specs from each places differ... this is because none of them know for sure.
Soon, Feb 21 we will see final specs and then we can check out the build quality of it and battery life.
I do believe Cancomputer.com has the right specs...but who knows LOL.
lets hope for the Best
Thanks,

I wonder if that particular model represents the blue color version.
-
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
Yes it is the blue one, i've only seen pics of the blue one.. there's very little to no info about the green one.. well i prefer blue over green any day
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
There's a green one!
When I looked up the P1 Express on the LG website it showed silver or blue. Anyone out there have a picture of the green one?
The other thing I always check for (very small detail) is what key is placed above the backspace key. The Dell D610 I'm typing on has the "end" and "Page dn" keys above it which is fine. I had an old laptop that had the insert key above it and it drove me bonkers! I fat fingered that key so much that editing any doc took me twice as long. -
So I have personally saw the unit on display, unfortunately its in a display case so no hands on
. The P1 express was selling for about 1700(US) with the following specs:
Core Duo 1.83Ghz(t2400)
100GB SATA 5400RPM
512mb ddr2 667mhz
15.4 WXGA
DVD dual layer
ATI X1400
Wireless 3945abg
5 in 1 card slot
fingerprint ID
The sales guy said the battery is around 3 hours approximately, you need to throw in another 150 for an extra 512 stick of ram. The display was nice and crisp for sure in the demo reel they were showing and had good color contrast. The keyboard looked kind of strange though, it was elevated and had clear gaps between the keys.
On a side note, I also found out that the M1 was scheduled to arrive at the end of Feb. They were thinking of selling it for 18000HK ~ 2300US. But thats a tad pricey considering the other competition around from Sony, NEC etc...which are more 'prestigious' brands around here.
What do you guys think?...is the P1 a good deal? -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
Unfortunately the European and Asian market are getting the worst versions of the P1... mainly low res screen, not the fastest CPU, X1400 instead of a X1600, low ram.
I really suggest you play with the laptop first before you purchase.
Please try to get hands on approach to this laptop, get the feel of the laptop, keyboard, flex in the keyboard, palm rest, screen.
What is the build material?
What is the mah on the 6 cell battery?
Here in Canada we might be getting a 2.0ghz, WSXGA+, X1600, 1gb of ram, 80gb SATA for 2400$.
This laptop would be good if the keyboard and build quality and batterylife is good, otherwise this laptop would be a FLOP and one of those don't buy because of its specs.. lol.
We havta wait 1 more week before it comes to CAnada.
In terms of your HK version... i would check out the Acer 8204... and comapre the price...
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Anybody get a chance to check the new modules in stores yet? I'm in the US so I have no reference.

MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
sorta read this... i have made some comments on it. (sorta)
http://www.notebookforum.ca/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1015
These notebooks will be shipped at the end of the week, roughly gonnna be out on monday... and will be available at Future Shop and Bestbuys first.. then other shops will get them.
Also, i will be visiting futureshop and donig a small review containing:
Build quality
Screen Quality
Keyboard Quality
Heat
(I can't do noise cos of the store noise)
I will get exact specs.
And then i will make my decision to whether buy it or not..
Mainly if the build quality and screen quality and keyboard sux.. i will not buy.
The price at futureshop will be 2400$ Canadian
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Sounds great, looking forward to it.
-
MysticGolem..i look forward to your mini review..PICS please...
(prays that this can take the cake from the 8204) -
I just read the thread on the link you posted. The fact that it is lacking a WSXGA+ is really disappointing. Everything else about it would almost have to be perfect to consider it.
-
I'm this close to shelling out the clams for a thinkpad T60p but I can't get that LG S1 out of my mind - the black & white design, the 10-keypad (the lower price). The LG has style, but is it only skin deep...
Looking forward to what you can tell us about it Mystic. -
I'm very curious as well! Looking forward to you reporting back golem!

MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
Yup will do a mini review as soon as Futureshop or Bestbuys gets it.
Also wouldn't I look weird if i go there and take my digi cam and take pics??
I don't wanna look weird LOL.
Also regarding the S1, i suggest you don't get it... despite its black and silver chasis... its roughly 300$ more than the P1.
Also the P1 has 2 colors, silver/blue, silver/silver, we have no clue which ones will be coming to the stores.
And Yes this is somewhat a replacement for the Acer 8204.
Currently there are 4 15.4" Gaming/School Notebooks
Acer 8204 - $2500
LG P1 - $2400
Samsung X60/P60 - $$$$ Too much
Macbookpro - $2000/$2500
As you know the Acer 8204 is a matte screen and has light leakage and is not bright, but it is high res and it has alot of nice features.
The LG P1 is decent, low res glossy screen, and has some features.
Samsung X60/P60 well this thing is AWSOME... but it would cost an arm and a leg for this baby.
The Macbookpro has a nice screen not sure if its glossy or matte and offers alot of features but you havta use a MAC OS for roughly 1 year, until vista is released.
Please Let Me know
Thanks,

Don't forget the W3j
The Z92j as well.
But anyways, you can't bring a camera inside, there's some rule of some sort, private policy of something I believe. -
well in canada..isn't the s1 pretty much the p1 ..except for the colour ?
-
They're pretty close otherwise, looks like same cpu/ram/wireless/etc. Personally I'm looking for a widescreen display, even if it's just WXGA, and maybe a 256MB card instead of a 128 but no clue if S1 will offer that. -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
lol read this... basicaly the S1 has piano black paint +300$ added to the P1 and they call it a S1 LOL
http://www.notebookforum.ca/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1015

Also this is why i recommend the P1 over the S1..unless you really want black paint.. lol, for 300$ i would pay someone to do some awseom graphics.

LG P1-J225A8
Display 15.4" SXGA+ TFT
Video Capability ATI X1600 128MB
LG S1-P400A9
Display 15.4" WXGA Fine Bright
Video Capability ATI X1600
That's cut & paste from the links. What am I missing? -
I can't really picture a 15.4" non widescreen either.
-
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
the P1 does not have 15" screen nor is it SXGA....
the P1 is a 15.4" WXGA with Finebright
THe S1 is a 15.4" WXGA with finebright
Both laptops are essentially the same... except the S1 has piano black paint which costs 300 more... but i don't know all of the specs of the S1 100%
I know all of the specs of the P1.
15.4" WXGA with Finebright (1280x800)
X1600 256mb (hypermemory 512) I am somewhat confident its 256 dedicated
1GB DDR2 @ 667 MHz (2x512)
80gb HD @ 5400rpm
2.0ghz Yonah
Finger Print TPM
Full Size Keyboard with a squashed-in numpad
Paint should be Silver/Blue
But another model can have Silver/Silver
Magnesium chasis on the INSIDE! but Plastic on the OUTSIDE
- PS i called LG regarding this and they told me basicaly everything about it.
The S1 is exaclty the same but cost 300$ more with piano black paint.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Ok, Cancompouter's got the specs a wrong.
Looking at the .pdf spec sheets from LG's site, the machines appear nearly identical. The main differences are a small variation in chassis size & weight and something to do with a remote control...
S1: IR receiver (for remote), 358.8 x 264.4 x 31.7 mm, 2.82kg, x1400/x1600
P1: No IR reciever, 355.2 x 261.2 x 31.7 mm, 2.78kg, x1300/x1400/x1600
So I guess the S1 is for if you want a slightly bigger & heavier version of the P1 with a remote and black paint... I see how it doesn't make sense now, lol -
here in abu dhabi, uae i've only seen the m1. looks pretty good though. does anybody know anything about that one. it has the nvidia geforce 7400 or 7600, i'll try to get the 7600 but may have to settle for the other as im probably going to be getting it soon. only 1.6GHz core duo processor tho..

The P1 and S1 specs are the same here.
One question I want to ask is what is 512MB(HyperMemory)? -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
Thanks for the specs
Any price for it in AU?
Hypermemory:
2 versions of the X1600 one with 128mb dedicated and one with 256mb dedicated.
I think the S1 and P1 both come with a 128mb X1600, in this case if your doing something visually intense, like Gaming and ay the card needs more memory, it will draw some from your RAM provided you have enough free.
the S1 and P1 both have 1 gb of ram, so if there's enough space the X1600 will take up to 386mb or ram to help the vid card to render those graphics.
128mb Dedicated + 386mb RAM = 512 Hypermemory.
So that's what hypermemory is, its a great thing, Nvidia also has it, called turbocache.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Thanks Mystic for your reply, your answer really cleared everything up. So that video card is only 128mb dedicated? I originally thought it was 512mb and I was like WTF??? haha
I saw a place in Australia selling it for $3300 ...that's the price for the S1. I"m not exactly sure of the pricing for the P1.
Hope this information helps.
As you can see form my sig...I have a Fujitsu laptop now...and I'm planning on buying a Sony FE series for my GF next week. After seeing those core duo speeds, it made me wanna sell my notebook and get a new one.
I haven't bought anything LG in my life, so I don't know how good their laptops are. Do you guys have any idea of the quality of the notebooks?
I really want a core duo, do you guys have other recommendations? All I need is 15.4 widescreen, bluetooth and a remote control. haha -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
oh ic, interesting,
You got a few options here.
Firstly, Maybe you can give your GF your current Fuji laptop, and wait roughly 1 week untill Canada gets the LG Express Dual series.
I will do a quick mini review on w/e models are available instore regarding screen, build quality, and some how figure out batterylife.
I am sure others will do that same.
Right now there is very limited info regarding LG laptops, so far they are OK...nothing too special except the the LG TX, P1 and S1 beacuse they are very unique.
Your other options is just like you said.
Sell you Fuji. Then, hypothetically speaking lets say, that all these new LG Express Dual Series notebooks are top quality.
You get yourself a S1
Then you get your gf, either a TX, T1, or an ASUS 14" laptop.
If the LG laptops are not that great in terms of build quality, its tue people will definately sacrifice it for a laptop.. just look at Dell buyers, and Toshiba and Acer...
Also you will need to tell us what kinda laptop your GF wants or the type you want to give to your GF.
w/e the case
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
Well the problem I have is my girl friend only likes Sony, so I'm definitely buying a sony for her. As for myself I will keep hunting and researching for the right notebook.
Thanks for all the info and I"m looking forward to your review. -
Australian stores are getting the new models in now.
Pricing I've seen so far (inc GST):
LG M1-52A6A 15" 1.66GHz Core Duo Notebook $2250 (US$1650)
LG K1-223MA 15" 1.5GHz Celeron M $1100 (US$800)
LG S1-J3A2A 15.4" 1.66GHz $2550 (US$1850)
LG S1-P3B3A 15.4" 2.06GHz $3350 (US$2450)
P1 shows up on the aus website, but i haven't seen any prices.
No mention of the T series -
Where did you get the prices from? -
Any of there new notebooks have anything better than 1280x800 yet?u
-
I don't know if it really does, BUT, if there were to be a theoretical S1 model that had a 256MB dedicated on it's x1600 and a 1680 x 1050 screen, all it would take is a couple positive reviews on it's heat/build quality to get me to switch horses mid-stream.
I'm shamelessly in love with the black & white style of the S1! -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
emachines where you getting ur info regarding the S1's high res and 256mb vid card?? plz let me know.
Also i can check on Monday, regarding this.
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
The 256mb x1600 was just me fantasizing a theoretical S1
But the higher res comes from here: initial press release announcement articles. -
-
here in germany the s1 is available with the following specs:
Core Duo T2500 2x 2.00GHz 1024MB (2x 512MB) 100GB DVD+/-RW DL ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256MB max.512MB shared memory USB 2.0/FireWire/Modem/Gb LAN/802.11abg 5in1 Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro/xD) 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) Windows XP Professional
priced at 1750 euros
I'm really tempted to get this one instead of the sony fe11 if there would be any reviews available. -
The T60p is a great machine, but the S1 (given the stats above) would definately be a better fit for me. There's a few factors about the T60p I'll never use (UXGA, WWAN, and build quality will be wasted on a laptop that never leaves the house). On the other hand the S1's got firewire (which I can use), built in card readers (which I can use), widescreen (which I prefer), 10-key (very cool) and looks (love it), and it's less expensive.
If the S1 doesn't have any heat issues and I can actually acquire one with Siriusde's quoted stats, I'll be totally sold
If not I guess I'll "settle" for the overkill of the T60p -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
Siriusde, where did you get those stats??? What site???
What about the UK?? Any info on the P1 and S1 in the UK, also Canada if you can get it and plz provide links to the stores or store sites.

well models vary from country to country. In germany the lg s1 is equiped as stated already. It can totally differ in the UK or Canada.
I saw the S1 on a german site which compares prices @ online stores.
http://geizhals.at/eu/a191341.html
It also lists an online dealer that ships to the UK but if you can't read german you won't be able to order.
I heard that shipping only starts in 5-10 days though. -
MysticGolem Asus MVP + NBR Reviewer NBR Reviewer
Sirusde, yah when i click on the link, i see like a lot of stores... but all of themse say. WXPH...=WXGA = Low Res.
About 2 weeks ago, i talked with LG Canada, they stated specifically they do not have high res glossy screens, nor will they use high res matte screens on their new laptops...simply because the average user prefers glossy.
Also in case of 15.4" multimedia notebooks will usually come with glossy screen, if the companty considers it as a multimedia notebook.
Also i think the maker of the screens is Samsung, not 100% sure, but yah it could be them...as soon as we find a laptop we can also check on that, some how.
Lets just wait and see i guess... lets not get our hopes up too much :|
ohwell..
Thanks,
MysticGolem -
since you're not fluent in german I guess I'll have to translate
:
Versandgewicht = 3,4 kg in english Shipping weight = 3,4 kg/7.5 punds
this means it's not the actual weight of the laptop rather the weight of the laptop + equipment cd's manuals etc...
regarding the screen we really need to wait. some sites say wxph some say wsxga+
I'm really in love with this laptop I wish there would be a decent review or something. -
Thanks for clarifying.

I just ordered my P1 in. I will post a review after I recieve it in a week or 2.
