Hello,
my S1 Express gets hotter them ever.
the fan is letting cold air out (most of the time), but the bottom of the notebook is very hot.
this does not seem to cause any performance issues, but ever when setting the fan to Cool Mode, it doesn't help.
I think it does cause a reduction in battery lifetime.
any ideas?

Seems like the heat from the CPU isn't getting conducted away properly. The fan control is based on the temperature in the CPU so the fan will run more and faster. First check whether there is any dust / fluff in the cooling system (blow it out with a can of compressed air or suck it out with a household vacuum cleaner). If this makes no difference then I would suspect that the heat sink may be slightly loose and lost its thermal bond with the CPU. If the heat sink is not easy to get at then the work sould need to be done under warranty.

Thanks,
I will try clean for dust.
I was avoiding a Lab check because I need the notebook constantly & the nearest Lab is quite distant from my location... -
Recently I've noticed my LG S1 becoming really hot too, and sometimes crashing. It wasnt like this before.
Usually i was able to play oblivion on high settings with fanspeed at normal, without any trouble. Having the laptop in my knee. Now it's getting way to hot to have it there and it's almost burning my fingers if i touch the underside of the laptop. Even the mouse pad and the keyboard is getting quite hot.
I've placed the laptop in my TV furniture on top of the Surround system, wich generates a little bit of heat too. That didnt work very well at all.. sometimes it would crash even if i didnt do any heavy stuff on the laptop.
I've dropped the laptop a couple of times though
so it wouldnt surprise me if the heat sink was a bit messed up
Gotta check it out.

Did you install Vista?
My S1 runs way hotter and the battery lasts 40 min less since I installed Windows Vista. Even with aero off and a bunch of services disabled.
Going back to XP ASAP. -
LOL, brought out the Vacuum Cleaner yesterday aand wanted to check if maybe the fan was clogged by some dust... Well yes it was, a ball of dust, the size of a hamster came out the fan hole after some intense vacuuming... well now the laptop is running REALLY cold... No more burn marks... =) Yehaaa!

I did the same afew days ago but nothing changed.
I finally had some spear time to the the notebook to the lab - they said they did some serious cleaning on the fan.
now it seems to work just fine.

I find the memory located underneath the touchpad is the hottest part of the notebook. The videocard only gets warm but if I'm playing some games on my lap the cover for the memory starts to get pretty damn toasty. Hot enough for me to worry anyway. Is this common for other users as well? Do you think it is fine to use it under those conditions for extended periods of time?

My memory aslo heats a lot. Otherwise very cool.

It's getting hot in here again...

I have to exact same problem (as described in forst post). I'm trying the vacuum in a couple of minutes and I will see if it's not too hard to open the notebook itself and clean whatever needs to be cleaned.
-
you might want to consider undervolting. should drop your load temps around 10 degrees C
-
But its not the processor thats heating but the memory.
-
my lap is getting also very hot there where the memory is....befor didn't was like this...but now is really hot there
...so i have the same problem...why?
-
maybe we should start collecting model numbers...
-
I have the cheapest i could find
S1-QP44V
I have tried to clean it up, maybe it made a little difference but not much. I still was expecting this laptop to be cooler, but nonetheless im really pleased with my machine. It just seems weird that its the memory part that heats up. -
does this sounds like a model: S1-MDUOE?

I've been having this same problem for some time..
I used to be able to crank up Oblivion fairly high while laying in bed without a problem.. These days it can't handle World of Warcraft on bare minimum graphics for over 10 minutes without crashing.
Sent it in to the lab 3 times, got it back 3 times with the uplifting message "We couldn't find anything wrong with it."
So I don't know, maybe it's built to degrade over time?
(edit: I ended up having to buy a new computer since I couldn't be without one due to work.. But I still want this damn thing to work..)
It's getting hot in here...
