Sounds good. One other thing... how are you guys cleaning the laptop LCD lid? The piano part. I tried Clorox and watered napkins, and both left some bad watermarks after they evaporated.
-
Ive only used the microfibre cloth so far a few times. Im still hesitating to use something that'll leave an ugly mark up there
-
Dunno how different the S1 coating is, but what I do with the desktop case is clean it first with with a watered Chifonet (standard wiping cloth) and instantly afterwards with dry tissues or napkins. The watered swipes clean away the dust and grease, and the dry swipes clean away the what-would-become-watermarks. Give that a shot, hopefully it'll work also for S1's piano lacquer. -
Hi. I've been following this topic for a while. I'm deciding between the S1 Core 2 duo and the sony vaio fe31z - also core2duo... . I'm from Slovenia, and we can't get shlt here computer-vise. So I'll have to order from some other country here in europe. I want to know if there is a choice of glossy/non glossy screen when buying or not? I haven't been able to pick this info out of the discussion. And what kind of gddr does the x1600 have - ddr2 or 3?
And how would you compare the build quality to let's say a Sony Vaio FE series?
Thnx. -
I think I'll clean the notebook with the special micro fiber for glasses, is kinda expensive but if it is for glasses it must be very soft and indeed it is.
And for Nutcase.v, there are glossy/matte but deppends in the model, you can check them here: http://www.milestonepc.com/states/index.php?cPath=209&osCsid=9c0ba0b2df4bb402fcb955a14b7c9b05
ATI X1600 use GDDR3.
And I can't compare the built cuality yet because I still dont have my S1 now -
Calzon_V_:
Isnt milestonepc loacted in the states? Thats pretty far away from Slovenia
Nutcase.v im from Denmark and I ordered mine in Germany from www.notebook-shop.de There you also have the choice to configure the laptop to a certain degree. -
Ya Bjuste Milestone is located in USA/Canada
-
Thanx.
I decided to go for the sony vai fe31z anyway, because it's more than 500€ cheaper. It does have a little less graphics ram and a bit slower cpu, but at least I know for sure that the screen is superb. I'm not really sure about the screen on the S1 after reading posts on this forum. -

Well, better save than sorry
But the screen on my S1 is among the best ive seen! -
Yeah, I don't really see what's the matter with the screen? I'm running it on the darkest setting to conserve battery right now, and the screen at the full WXSGA+ resolution, I have no problem reading all of the text displayed here. Of course, when the brightness is at its maximum, it matches any other LCD's.
-
does the new s1 offer an integrated webcam?
-
Im afraid not fxguy. Thats one thing that it hasnt integrated into its notebooks yet, others being Expresscard and a standard 7200 RPM hard drive with a 9-cell battery (although now im asking for too much
)
-
Ah, I should receive my S1-M2STV on Monday. Can't wait.
-
Do the LG's have an option to upgrade to a 7200rpm drive? I was originally looking at a Voodoo i534 but I do not want to wait 60+ days to receive my laptop. I am currently looking at the one listed below. In addition I am in the US, what kind of warranty support can I expect? Will it be difficult to get it serviced if I ever need to? Thanks.

Well, I'm happy to report that I received my S1-M2STV in the morning.
The specs are as promised:
Core 2 Duo T7400 @ 2.16GHz
2x1024 MB 667Mhz DDR
15.4" WSXGA+ screen, glare-type
Ati Mobility Radeon X1600 (256MB dedicated, 512 with Hypermemory)
Hitachi Travelstar 7K100, 7200rpm, 100GB hard drive. HTS721010G9SA00 to be precise.
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4082N SMDL burner, apparently no lightscribe though. Pity.
+ the rest of the stuff.
This model isn't painted in the piano gloss though, rather a matte black finish. Also the keyboard and surroundings are not ivory white but silvery. I guess this is a sound long-term choice. It might not look as flashy now, but it'll probably better in a year than a piano paint would be. Not to wish doom upon anyone's gloss finishing though.
I'll report back on my findings later, just doing updates and installations slowly besides everything else. The first impression is pretty positive, but I haven't really done anything with it yet. Screen looks nice in my opinion, which is the most important thing. No graininess or anything else visible so far. Color reproduction is not as vibrant as on my Samsung 930BF TFT straight out of the box, but I'm sure it can be tweaked better. White balance is perfectly in order by default though, I can't see any tint. The Samsung has the bluish thing going on, but none of that is evident here. -
dtw!
It would be nice if you could check if your S1 has the powerplay option for your ati x1600. -
I guess the Lightscribe was a mislabelling.
Post some pics of that matte finish -
Bjuste, can't find the Powerplay options on CCC, so I suspect it's still not supported. Going with the default drivers at the moment, and since Intelligent Update seems to be on a slowmode now (was quick earlier) I might as well try the Omegas at some point. I just can't understand why they wouldn't support this.
AP27: Nobody claimed it to be Lightscribe, I was just hopeful. Doesn't really bother me though, I don't burn many discs and I need to label even less.
Put a couple of pictures here. They're not good, but you should get the general idea. -
dtw, where did you purchase your LG from? I really would like one configured with a 7200rpm drive. I checked Milestonepc.com but they only had the 5400rpm ones.
-
dtw!,
Ok.. Me neither, but it is probably due to some compability issues regarding sleep mode ect. I have considered sending LG a mail to adress this issue, but their lack of response from earlier mails Ive sent them resultet in me not bothering... ;(
But anyways, Ive got the S1 version with Ivory white and piano black, but from the looks of the pics you posted, the "matte" style looks pretty **** neat too ;D -
dtw!,
Thanks for the pics
Actually the LightScribe feature was stated in one of the reviews here, so i was expecting it to have LS on it. Doesnt really matter, i dont really need labelling as i dont burn that many discs.
A little quirk of mine is that they still put up the centrino duo sticker on it, i would prefer to show off my Core 2 Duo system with a proper Core 2 Duo sticker -
It's from a Finnish retailer verkkokauppa.com though. Did you try contacting MilestonePC for a preconfigured upgrade? Maybe they'd be able to do it without voiding the warranty.
Bjuste: this isn't as much eye-candy as the piano finishing one is, but I believe the matte can take a little more wear and tear. My initial thought about the Powerplay was the "Designed for Windows XP - Windows Vista Capable"-tag. I've seen rather strange requisites for getting these tags, but I dunno if not allowing GPU clocks to go below a fixed limit would be one of them. -
-
dtw!,
Yeah, the "Vista" theory is problable.. I use NHC to control the power/noise of my notebook, and Im not even capable of down clocking the graphics card manually. What do you think about the noise level of the S1?
-
-
Yeah, I think the sound level is very reasonable too. Although I am a little unhappy with the lower right fan which seems to be uncontrollable, and runs all the time. Although the noise is bearly hearable, so I cant really complain
-
I think you can downclock the GPU using ATi Tools... or was it ATi Tray Tools.
-
Its ATi Tool
Although im not sure that downclocking it lowers the speed of the GPU fan. Havent really paid attention to it. -
Has anyone of you tried to downclock using Ati Tool?..
And no, it probably wont slow down the GPU fan. -
I downclock my X1600 to 214/220 when im unplugged and not gaming. Using ATi Tool. Works well. Yea...theres no change in GPU fan speed.
Its pretty scalable if you ask me, all the way down to 214/220 (havent tried going lower...although i think it would be able to) and also up to 502/504 without artifacting and any additional cooling. -
Nice, maybe I should consider trying that. But I wonder why I cant get it to work in NHC.
