Are you happy with your LG laptop?

I am happy with my S1 Pro so far, but I am a bit afraid of problems. Considering the poor English in their user guides and software, the chaos on their global web sites, and the fact that many things such as BIOS upgrades are a mystery I don't really want to experience the day where I really need technical support from LG.
I am also a bit disappointed that I bought a premium Notebook that has a Windows Vista Capable sticker on it, but until today (and Vista is out already) the new OS is not even an available option in their download section.
I also just found out today that I probably don't have the TPM chip that is featured so much on the S1 promotion brochures, web sites and even on the sticker on my notebook ("on select models"). When I bought my notebook I could select between the S1 and the S1 Pro, so my conclusion would have been anyway that it would be included, even if I would have seen the small * at that point of time... another surprise from today was that I actually only have a PCMCIA slot instead of ExpressCard/54. On the LG site it says "ExpressCard/54 or PCMCIA Type II". The _or_ of course I didn't notice, but since I have the "Pro" version why should I have the older/slower thing anyway? Even my girlfriends Fujitsu has a dual slot with ExpressCard and PCMCIA Cardbus.
The above probably sounds a bit negative now, but apart of this I love it and it works great so far. Using it under XP pro for 2 months now, and I actually managed to get Vista running as second system on my hard drive. -
I have one regret on it. Mainly tech support. Im unsure of the quality of service they will offer. My notebook came with a defective hard drive (damaged sectors) and ive just found some time to get something done about it. I contacted LG and they told me to ship it in to them (i refused). I contacted one of their service centers here in toronto, and they offered to run diagnostics and order a replacement part if the hard drive is indeed defective. the diagnostics wont take time, although im not too sure how long the part shipping will take. Ill keep you guys updated in this thread. This regret may not be a regret if everything turns out fine.
Other than that, no problems whatsoever. I love the look and feel, built well enough to withstand my daily abuse (not abuse really...just a little roughing)...and performs extremely well (minus the stupid hard drive). I might just end up buying a 7200RPM drive and stuffing it in there myself. -
My one and only regret with the T1 is the difficulty getting linux up and running on it. I look forward to the time when Intel945, agere 1310 and ipw3945 are part of the kernel.
Reliability, performance etc. have been great for me. -
My regret is the absence of support for the Ati card, and the fact that it has no powerplay option. Also my former laptop(Dell8600) was completely noiseless, and I was anticipating this one to be to, unforntunately it is not. Bu besides that it is a killer laptop, and the perfomance is really worth every penny
-
I don't have any regret
-
the only gripes i've had with my S1 are a hard drive with a few bad sectors causing seldom crashes, wireless connection problems with my router that forced me to restart my router every couple hours, and the black top scratches really easily .. but thats due to my own negligence =(
otherwise this is one fantastic machine -
Have no regreats. Was going for the ASUS A8JS but it never arrived. Got tired of waiting and bought a S1 pro. The quality of materials, sound, etc is excelent. Maybe I too fear the LG support, but that is if happens something to it.
-
I have a Lg S1 Pro Express Dual, and I'm happy untill now...no errors or something ..but I'm sad ....a little bit more is that them web site is not so organised and systematically like must to be...for example no Bios update, and everything is not professional with them ,,update drivers,, and this I don't like it.
And if somebody can help me...how i can see if my hhd is without problems...or how you saw that your hard disk is having problems? -
Yes, the LG website/customer support isnt too efficient.
It was me who had the HDD problem. I was experiencing a few crashes right from when i got my system. So i did a complete reformat and it seemed to lessen the crashes. Then they started turning up again, with random programs ceasing to work for no reason. Another reformat. Then i decided to check the disk for errors (disk-check). It never completed. I left it on for like 10 hours...was stuck at 21%. Tried it again. Same thing. Then while trying to install Linux, i got an error regarding bad sectors and that the OS would not be able to install. Looked up bad sectors and saw quite a bit of info about them being due to a defective HDD. I'll be taking my system in for service sometime this week.
Another thing i'd like to let u guys know, i contacted LG first and they asked me to ship the notebook to them. Having heard a few horror stories about this before, i refused. I was able to locate an Authorized LG Service Centre in my area and paid them a visit. Now ive set up my schedule where i just have to drop off my system for a diagnostics check first (very good if you cant afford to leave your laptop due to work or whatever) and pick it up again while they place an order for the defective HDD (in this case). When it arrives, i stop by their place once again for about an hour while they replace the drive. I opted to install Windows and stuff by myself, although you can give them your recovery CDs and stuff and they would do it for you. I'd say its advisable to just take ur laptop to a service centre instead of shipping it to them for any service under warranty. -
ap27 how it was this crashes to you ?...just to know maybe also my laptop have this ...and how ,or with what you made the ,,disk-check,, for errors....?
-
The crashes were just random. Everything would stop working (mouse, keyboard, everything) and i would have to hold down the power button to turn off and restart. I used the Disk-check option in windows (right click your hard drive in my Computer and go to properties. Then go to Tools>>Error Checking.
You will need to schedule it for the next restart. It will scan when u restart ur laptop. Mine never finishes. So im presuming theres something wrong with the hard drive. -
thank you...now i will see if also my hhd is good or bad .....
and i hope with your hard disk ...the new one will get better
-
hey AP27 .. where did you find the locations of any authorized service centres? from the not-so-stellar LG website?
-
Yea. I found it while going over their Global Cyber Support Centre site.
Go here: http://ca.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp
Then click the 'Service Centres' link at the top. It should bring you to the search page where you can search for the one nearest you. Although i think this one may be for LG Canada or North America or something. -
I did a disk check and everything was fine
lucky me -
I didn’t get the chance to go through all the futures on my S1 Pro Exp Dual but right now I have no problem at all. My only concern is the lack of support that I might face in the future when I need to update the hardware and that's making me hesitate of switching to Vista.
-
lol Calzon.
Its not very common to get a disk with bad sectors, since theyre usually caught in Quality testing or QA. I guess i got the occasional messed up one.
EDIT: I cant find my receipt now
I'll try and see what they can do to help now -
I'm totally satisfied with my LG S1 (just likeAP27's) except for a screen problem that I need to contact LG for... Also, I don't really the ATI video card, I would have prefered an nVidia. I'm not a huge gamer, but everytime Battlefield 2142 crashes without warning, I have difficulty controling myself! Hahaha!
Dawn... the nearest service center is 382.88km away... Guess I'll have to send it directly to LG. Do you guys think I should ask them to add a new 1 GB chip to my notebook or it would be better to buy one and install it by my own? -
@Saorex
I dont think ive heard of any specific incompatibilities that BF2142 has with ATi cards. It ran fine on my system. Its probably a driver problem or maybe just the game is buggy (its built on BF2, and BF2 had some of the worse coding).
Anyway, it would probably be cheaper to install another GB of RAM by yourself (assuming you have 1 GB at the moment). There is a small cover in the center of the bottom of the laptop which houses one of the RAM slots. The other one is located under the keyboard. S1's with 1GB of RAM usually have that bottom slot free, so you can easily open it and add more RAM by yourself.
Let us know how your ordeal goes about sending the laptop to LG. Make sure to keep constant track of it, as there have been 1 or 2 bad stories of LG delaying to send the laptops back. -
Thanks AP27. I didn't know BF had such a bad coding! Hahah!
About the RAM, I checkek yesterday and yes, I have a free slot. My main problem with this is: what and where to buy?
I will contact LG tomorrow. I need to put my hand on the reciept, but I'm pretty sure it's not far. If I can't find it back, I'll contact NCIX to arrange something. I'll keep you guys informed. It's great to talk to people owning the same notebook! Hehe! -
You could buy it from NewEgg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227099
Or Tigerdirect <=== got mine from here
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2217057&CatId=2268 -
All right! Thanks a lot. I'm ordering right now!
Is Newegg Canadian? And why is there such a big difference in the price (except the mail-in rebate) ? Second one is "value" RAM... cheaper? -
No problem
Enjoy your performance increase
EDIT: Nah...newegg is american. Their price is in American Dollars where has the tigerdirect link i have you is to the Canadian one. -
had my s1 for about 5 months now, it runs pretty good, love the screen and all the cool extra features like the remote. i like everything about it, and the only regret that i have is that i wish i could have waited for core duo 2 but w/e vista is crap right now anyways
-
I love my P1 more for each day I use it, Im really happy I decided to buy a LG. I cant complain at all.
-
The customer service has been extreemly poor.
One year and six weeks after I bought the laptop the motherboard failed. LG refused to fix it under waranty.
LG customer support wouldn't even respond to my emails. If I phoned them up they said they'd call back, and didn't.
No driver updates have been posted, the laptop won't display video on the TV while displaying over two screens. I couldn't install the screen drivers directly from AMD either, they were locked out. \
I rue the day I bought the **** thing. Now I've updated to vista I've found that I can't get a two available displays to work, and if I activate the TV display I can't switch back to the LCD unless I sleep and wake.
After the very short battery life of my LG phone after having it for a year the battery lasts a day on standby, and a couple of minutes in a call, and I'm still paying off the contract, I'll never ever buy another LG product. -
oooo sad to read this....but i think you must to sue them ...because your lap is still in garanty so tell them that you sue them........if they are like this......sad!
-
Sad to hear that.
But for your phone, it all depends in how you use/recharge the battery.
I've had 3 LG phones including the Chocolate and the battery is always about 5-6 days. -
I was pretty satisfied until yesterday..
the lcd started flaking and showing different colours even in bios, so it's not a driver issue
anyway
called their tech support and instead of helping me on the phone they told me to email some guy and he will help me via email?
i have online schooling here and need a laptop and i have to wait for some dude to reply to his email?
and
the laptop is only 3 1/2 months oldwhich makes me more mad
my acer that i had took more of a beating and never babied and my sister uses it like a charm with no complaint, and no issues.
also it's the S1 model 2.0ghz -
I'm pretty happy with my laptop so far. I bought my laptop in Jan 06, and have had no major problems.
My biggest quibble has been with support. That website is god awful, and software/driver updates are virtually non-existent. I'm scared to think what will happen when I need actually servicing.
It's bad enough that I probably won't buy LG next time. -
Happy with it...except for the following:
The lid is soooo very not scratch resistant, the slightest brush will scratch that pretty thing
customer support is terrible, their comp systems were down when i wanted to send my laptop in b/c of these white dots on my screen (which have yet to go away), they took down my information and were to get back to me with shipping instructions...it never happened
the right corner of the keyboard is not completely solid, nor is the low right bezel of my screen...which is imo unacceptable for such a premium laptop.
overall, I am satisfied as the hardware is fantastic and it still is a beauty, but these little imperfections are unacceptable imo and the tech service was terrible...not to mention I had to continously call them for about a week before I got anyone on a fone, their fone queuing system is terrible, rather than putting you on hold (which is an annoyance in itself) they just hang up =T
i wish i had the time to send this thing in for repairs but im on an academic exchange in hong kong and can't afford to be without my comp =T
but i haven't had much hitches in terms of crashes etc which is a plus. -
Very satisfied with the S1, only problem is the vendors who sell it don't mention whether or not it comes with the expresscard as I would rather have had an expresscard slot. I have been able to squeeze just over 3 hours with the 6 cell battery too so not too bad there.
-
I hate the LG software, and (un)intelligent update that came on my P1. And i also ran into the Expresscard/54 problem. I bought the P1 Pro Express dual (j004a9) and it said it came with the expresscard slot. ok, so i order it up, and no expresscard slot. i must have missed the tick box for the expresscard option. (Im sure there was no tick box!)
Besides that its a really solid computer that does everything i need it to, and does it really well.
And out of the blue, the ATI x1400 is actually pretty smooth for a lower-end mobile card. It plays CSS at Med-High really well.
God help me the day i need to get in touch with LG support again.
Im satisfied. but that doesnt mean i dont have regrets. -
Oh my god ....
i was planning to buy LG S1 ...
but you guys scared me to death !!
looks like I'll just forget it ! -
Maybe you shouldn't just forget it. LG support also varies from country to country. For instance in mine it is very good and I know an great number of people who have the S1 and are very satisfied. Actually it's been a best-seller since last year with very few complaints as for quality and support.
-
thanks .... maybe i fell better now !!
but look at the posts above ...
HDD , screen problems ..
most of the guys above have one of these two problems . -
P1-J003A9 here. The only regret I have isn't really a regret so much as buyer's remorse; I wish I'd held out longer or saved up more to get something a bit nicer and smaller like an A8Js. But really I can't fault the P1 at all, aside from a slow XP shutdown problem that has thus far evaded all my attempts to fix it. The numeric keypad is nice to have and everything performs quite nicely. No hard drive issues, and no major screen issues (there's a very slight dark spot in the bottom-left corner but it's hardly noticeable).
-
I have owned the P-1 for over 3 months now. Considering the price I paid (990€
I am more than happy with it. Some points could of been better, it could also have been a lot worse. I installed vista ultimate with 1,5gb and it runs like a dream, I have a battery life of roughly 2,5 hrs. just doing office work, sure the screen could be better, they could make it look a bit more attractive, but for my purposes it's great.
Actually the only complaint I have is it's size. I bought it online and decided to go for the 15,4" screen size, actually thinking it would be a bit smaller .... -
I'm very satisfied with my LG S1 Express Dual, I just wish i waited a couple of months so i would get the Core 2 Duo, instead of just Core Duo, waiting that time there would also be better screen resolutions available for the laptop screen. 1280 x 800 is a bit little for me, but mostly i use my laptop connected to my LCD TV using that as my main computer screen, so i can't use anything higher than 1280 x 720 anyways so this doesnt matter too much.

Completely
After using a LE50 for about 8 mounths, I changed to a LW40 since I was very happy with LG. The reason was simple LW40 was smaller (14 inch where LE50 was 15), lighter, fine bright wide screen(no fine bright in LE50 also 15 ich 1024 768 standard screen) bleutooth and fan control.
I should say that Lg is very good and I did not have any problems. However I wish a bigger cooler fan, in LE50 it was bigger so it runs less.
My next one will be LG for sure. I will be finishing my university soon, and I am looking for new models. I thought changing to T1 but it looks like making its ram to 2gb is almost impossible in my country.(one of the memory dim is seems smaller. If anyone got any info please inform me with PM) Also its hard drive is 1.8 inch which may cause problems if it gots broken. So I changed my mind for now. I am looking for new 14 inch notebooks from LG.
