I am running Ubuntu Linux on a Dell Inspiron 1200 and have no problem at all. I have also loaded Ubuntu into a Sony without problem. However I have trouble on this Dell with several distributions of Linux. So to answer your question you need to say what favor of Linux you are trying to install. Also I have noticed when running a CD-Live I sometimes have to boot several times before it catches. I am not sure what that is about but I know it happens to me.

I've tried two different linux flavors so far (Slitaz, Fedora) both directly from USB stick and they both worked well. Perhaps get yourself the newest version of the LiveCD of one of the major Linuxes. With Fedora for example, you get a new LiveCD pretty often. Just curious: which Linux did you try to run?

ps.: Slitaz runs like a charm and blazing fast (all from RAM with option to save permanent changes back to the USB). Unfortunately it is still too limited as to what available applications are concerned. But for the quickest web surfing (fastest Firefox ever seen, honestly), email checking and note taking it is marvelous!
