My LS50a laptop is 18 months old. I moved it to another room and when I booted up, there was a slight burning smell (I figured it was a bit of dust) and none of my USB ports were working. I've checked everything (drivers, reloaded software etc) and all is in normal working order except physically! I love this laptop, please help. I think I will have to replace the motherboard but not easy to do when I live on Sakhalin Island, Russia (but I am an Aussie). Any advice greatly appreciated, Cheers.

Are you sure the burning smell was from the laptop.Anyway, it might have been some plastic (wire cover) burning.About the USB have you tried the ports with a certain device or not.Try something else.Change your power managment options.

Thanks, Mujtaba. I've tried my printer, changed the cable, tried my camera, flashdisks and bluetooth, nothing works in any of the usb ports. I've changed power management from desktop to portable (is that what you meant?) but still nothing. The burning smell happened on start up and was definitely coming from the laptop.

Oh, if thats the case, its better to take it to the support ASAP.(take out the Hard Drive, back it up).I don't think much can be done, Sorry.
Aha, and one last thing.Reinstall your northbridge driver.

I actually bought it in Abu Dhabi (noticed you're in Iran) when we lived there, but I've been to several places here on Sakhalin (Russia) and no one wants to repair LG, even tho they stock LG goods. Will have to look further. I only know the general basics about computing so I'm sorry if this sounds naiive but how do I reinstall the northbridge driver please? Thanks for your advice, Mujtaba.

It should have been specified in the driver CD.
After digging data from the model number you seem to have intel 855GME Northbridge and ICH-4, so download the driver from here :
    http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/software/driver/index.htm#10
You might also want to try so live CD linux distributions like : Knoppix
(They are bootable and bring up some kind of linux, there you can check your USB ports)
Also go to the device manager. Is there any device that is marked with exclamation mark.See if they are USB controllers/hub etc.
    Hope this helps.
