I'm getting really slow download speeds when I run the update manager or download stuff from the synaptic package manager. Is there a way to get faster speeds?

I'm guessing the default server (from archive.canonical.com) is bogged down, so is it possible to download from elsewhere?

On Debian there is the netselect-apt package to find the fastest mirror for your connection, but it looks like it got pulled from Ubuntu in a recent release due to bugs(?).

There is a shell script here but I have no idea if it's any good.

I get slow speeds as well, and on our old connection it was so slow that it was a major process to switch servers, and selecting the best server didn't seem to help much. On our new connection, speeds still aren't the best, but it's more practicable to switch servers, and so I've found some better options. However, as a general rule, if you're running a web browser or otherwise keeping more connections open, it seems to keep the speed up.

Hope that info helps some. :)

Go system > Sources, then just choose 'select fastest server' or something. It usually always turns out to be the Australian internode provider.

Bumping my old thread. I compared the speeds from Ubuntu to that of Win7. The ping latency from Ubuntu is ~50ms and Win7 is half that (~22ms). The download speed from Ubuntu is somewhere between 0.60-0.70 Mb/s while Win7 is 2.52 Mb/s, a huge difference. It makes Ubuntu look like dial-up :( Is there any fix to this? I heard ip6v is the problem.

    Hmmm, ask at Ubuntu forums.
