Now that (K)Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) has officially been released, work on the next edition is underway - the "Gutsy Gibbon" will be out mid-October. What new features are you looking forward to?
-
-
I'm not really hoping for anything in particular. Definitely going to try fawn out.
-
Looking forward to it becoming more free.
-
I too am looking forward to the new 'ultra-free' version, though I doubt it will end up replacing my standard installation. I also hope to become more involved earlier on this time around.
-
There will be a more free version from my understanding, but still ship a fully working one that will include the nvidia drivers, Intel 3945 drivers, etc. as well, which will be the primary distro. Basically, they'll mirror Debian development.
That being said, I just upgraded my desktop from 6.10 to 7.04 remotely (I'm in Phoenix, heading to Denver tonight), so I'm looking forward to trying it out tonight, seeing if it broke my Doom3 install
And I'm running 7.04 X86_64 on my personal laptop, which is also a kick in the pants with all the multimedia and Fn buttons and such working, and a brand new Logitech G5 supposed to be delivered sometime during the day today

Yeah, same here Lysander and ftw. And I half-expected someone to say composite-by-default...but Pita still hasn't said anything, so maybe that's his kind of thing. Shuttleworth's release announcement is filled with cheesy (but funny) primate allusions, and he calls default composite "the monkey on [his] back."
-
Naah. Compiz isn't easily configurable from my experience, and Beryl isn't stable, not to mention both of them take up GPU time and battery life. As it is, Compiz is easily installable, as is Beryl, and I like it that way. If you want it, you can add it, but you don't have to have it, and it's not on by default to annoy or confuse new users.
-
This is exactly my take on it. Even if it had the option to be turned off, default composite would mean extra MB of space taken up for people who don't use it, like myself.
-
Compiz is already included in Feisty by default, it's just not activated. Desktop Effects is actually Compiz. Or did they take this out for the final release?
-
I hope for them to integrate SynCE to easily work with WM5 Mobile smartphones and PPCs.
I have tried so many ways and times to get it to work on Ubuntu. I haven't succeeded yet.
And also detection of Web-cams. -
No, it's there. It's a stripped down version of Compiz. It doesn't do a lot of the things people expect it to do, and it's really a pilot test run - a prelude to the real thing *possibly* this October
It's possible they got rid of it in the real final release. I am running the Beta + all updates as of 04/19. Perhaps it's different for the official release, like you say (considering it's a test)? -
SynCE is available in the Feisty repositories. Have you tried there?
Also, the best way to get your webcam to work under Linux is for your manufacturer to create drivers for it. It's very hard, if not impossible, for Linux devs to support proprietary hardware that the manufacturers have no interest in writing decent (or any) Linux drivers for. -
It must go by a differ name. I tried to search for it and no luck. -
Actually, I really want the feature of making GeeXbox type of things which generate a small partition(1G) just for media player. You know just like Quick play.
Another option could be "battery mode control" meaning: If it works on battery, it goes like windows that fix to lowest speed. Or let user fix that value. I think the feature is there, just not obvious to most of users.
Web-cam is really a big trouble for all linux distro, but it is not Ubuntu's fault, isn't it?
Oh, yeah. An user friendly CPU undervolt utility would be great. -
Just search for "synce" in the Synaptic Package Manager (not Add/Remove Applications). There are files for a KDE front-end, but they should work in Ubuntu Gnome no problem. Make sure you have your universe/multiverse repos open.
-
Oh ok. Next time I log-in to Ubuntu I'll be sure to do that. Thanks.
I actually forgot about Synaptic Package Manager and haven't touched it once in fesity.
