XFCE and Gnome both have 2 panels by default.
    Question: Do you prefer this?

No, I prefer my KDE setup with 3 panels. An autohiding one in the bottom left with the System Menu Menu, an autohiding one in the bottom right with the KMenu, system tray, and clock, and a permanently displayed one in the top right with the taskbar, which overlaps all the windows.

You don't have to stick to the default setup :p

What's gnome? lol When I used it, I preferred two panels, slightly modified from 'buntu OTB. Actually, with Xfce, I prefer one combined panel at the bottom which resembles a KDE "kicker"

It depends on the screen resolution. On my desktop I do prefer two, one on the bottom, and a wide one coming down the side from the top. When my new laptop comes I'll probably just have one with a taskbar, clock, and tray since it's only 1024x768. I'll use a keyboard shortcut to launch programs.

I do prefer this since Gnome is my preferred GUI environment at the moment.

When I tried openSUSE 11 (Gnome) with the one panel at the bottom (auto hide) I liked it so much that I changed it on my laptop (Ubuntu) to be the same. So one auto hide panel for me at the bottom.

I kind of like having two although the last time I used Mint I was fine with how they had set up the single panel in Gnome.
