I had a strange problem when updating to 2.6.27-11 from 2.6.27-9. When I rebooted I received an error message saying that "type1" module did not exist and that Ubuntu had to be run in low graphics mode. I tried editing the .xorg.conf file, but to no avail.
I rebooted a couple of times, but received the same message and then tried to reboot into 2.6.27-9, which worked!
Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Here is a discussion of the problem on the Ubuntu forums. One guy said that he needed to reinstall his Nvidia driver. Someone else said this wasn't a fix for him. Try to install the latest Nvidia driver and see if that fixes it for you.

What version of Ubuntu? If it's 8.10, I would rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak and then reinstall the nvidia driver. Xorg 7.4 and later don't need an xorg.conf to exist to start up, only if you want to install things like the NVidia driver and not use the auto-detected defaults.

The update to 2.6.27-11 has just been re-released to fix the corruption. Update your system and you will be fine.
