Yes obviously there is a lot more than this, but here's a little timeline chart of the big milestones and hurdles from linuxfoundation

I had no idea that's where the logo came from! Also makes you think (and shudder) what the net would look like if it were running on windows or apple boxes...

Thanks for the history lesson. Wow 20 years, it makes me feel old.

I first put linux on a desktop in 97, mainly because I was curious what they had done with something that was related to such an "OLD" OS ..i.e. Unix. After all to me, Unix was running our computer labs at college in 1979!
Used Libranet (Debian) around turn of millenia, then went several years without really using it much. Except on old boxes I kept in the guest room so guests could check their email. Plus it was fun to see the look on their faces when the machine booted up...LOL
Then I got back "into" it seriously in 2007 after just "having it around, but not doing much with it". Heck, it used to be pretty darned buggy!
Different story now...I just rebooted in Linux because my Win 7 desktop just locked up, froze....jeezus....I was letting it update, etc and running Firefox on one of my Dual Boot laptops....a Jethro Tull Vid was playing, and then sound, no video and complete lockup. Nice to be back in Linux now at this very moment....
Thanks for the overview. Didn't know that about being "bit".

PS: Some of the net does run on Windows and Apple Boxes remember. Unix, Solaris, *BSD and whole bunch of stuff. -
Why are the "milestones" all about marketing?
I thought it should be about major version changes? -
a lot of good history there, thanks for posting!

Technological progress for such a product is a given. I think they were right to show it this way, as it portrays its gradual path in to the public consciousness.
