Hello all. I'm a linux newbie and I'd love to get 3d performance workable. I am running an Asus W3V, which has a Mobility X600 64mb - (128 with hypermemory? Does this even work in Linux?)

I'm running Kubuntu 7.04 and I wish to get the best possible 3d performance, enough to run both linux games and WoW on Wine. I've installed the fglrx driver, which fixed the problems I had with my 2d performance on the desktop, which now runs at 1280x768; my native resolution.

However, when I run any 3d app like penguin racer or nexuiz everything is choppy, literaly down to 1 FPS or less, even on menu screens! glxgears also seem to rotate very choppily as well.

Anyone know what I can do?

I had a lot of trouble getting my ATI card working well under linux. It has been done though. Put a post on www.ubuntuforums.org and they'll be able to help you. ATI hasn't released very good drivers for linux yet but they are under a lot of pressure to do so from the community. Its only a matter of time.

welcome to the ATI linux experience, ATI sucks with linux period.

Hence why anyone who wants to use linux 3D stuff should get a nvidia.
This wos a big factor in my decession with a new laptop purchase.

Theres articles that show ATI lossing its shares, i can't help but think this has something to do with it, tho its probably not. Generally pc techs will only recomend Nvidia for linux.

ATI graphics solutions are actually not bad for Windows, its just their support for linux is just useless.

The better support for ATI products on linux aren't even done by ATI, just goes to show how bad it really is.

So far I haven't gotten any satisfaction over there. I would be happy to get an Nvidia card next laptop, but unfortunately this is what I have for now. Anyone have an inkling of success? Thanks again!

I have a W3V as well, but I've resigned to the fact that the ATi drivers suck... if I want to do anything 3d intensive, I just use my desktop (which has an nVidia card).

I'm not even using the fglrx drivers, I'm using the open source drivers instead. Apparently, their performance isn't as good, but I've yet to have them crash on me (which DID happen using ATi's drivers). I'm not using the laptop for anything graphics intensive anymore, so, I haven't noticed the speed difference.

I'm stuck with the ATI-equipped laptop I have now too. I wouldn't expect an immediate solution to your 3D problems. ATI and Linux work just fine for ordinary office-type computing, but when it comes to 3D stuff, you may be out of luck. Best keep Windows XP or Vista for that and dual boot, rather than choose only Linux. Eventually, ATI may catch up with good drivers for Linux-based systems.

i can play all kinds of graphics intensive games on my ATI 9700 laptop. Just install the correct drivers the correct way from the link i provided above.
