I know a few of you may be running linux so need some pointers.

After installing linux my CD-ROM drive dissapeared in BOTH OS's installed on my system.. RIGHT away I knew it had to do something with GRUB bootloader as I could run everything booting directly off the CD.. like ERD, or reinstall XP.

I know the laptop's native interface for the harddrive is SATA emulated by default to IDE so that it will be easy to run anything and everything without special drivers.. Problem is the CD-ROM bus is disabled because Grub thinks there is a ATA bug in the system.

luckly I did a install of the RECOVERY CONSOLE into the xp menu as the XP CD didn't give you a option to recover within the XP install CD and only gave install/partition options.

In the recovery console just mount the windows partition and type "FIXMBR"

on reboot CDROM was in My Computer. but now can't boot linux.

I was using the Kubuntu EDGY 6.10 LTR, does the latest Kubuntu 7.04 beta have this bug.. or is there a solution.

I think you'll get more replies in the Linux forum so I'll move this there for you. ;)

My suggestion would be to see if installing the latest version of GRUB fixes it for you. Seems like your hardware is set up in a way to cater to Windows users, and GRUB doesn't like the SATA > IDE.

Here's a link to where I described my experiences with the same issue:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=97762

Short story, apparently there is some conflict between Grub and the BIOS of the 5760 that prevents any OS that is loaded by Grub to access the optical drive. Apparently the problem is found under other distribs as well, not just Ubuntu. The solution that I found that worked was to use LILO. The drives work just fine when using that.
