I just wanted to say: wow, 8.10 really improved the 64-bit compatibility. I haven't had a single problem installing anything since I switched from 32-bit after reformatting my hard drive. Even flash works just by clicking 'install missing plugins'.

    I'm really impressed.

would you recommend 64bit ubuntu for daily use? I am thinking of installing it on one of my laptops as the only os.

While 64-bit has come a long way, there are still come issues. The main reason I went with 64-bit over 32-bit is because I have to run simulations on the order of days. Having a 64-bit OS will reduce the computing time, but if its just for everyday use, I would take the increased compatibility over the performance gain.

But on the other hand having a 64-bit OS will future proof your system more, but be prepared to deal with the occasional headache :)

People always say this, but I have yet to have a single headache with 8.10. I only had a few when I used 7.04. 64 bit is BETTER.

The dual/triple-boot manuals on this webpage are very good to start with.
It offers step-by-step guides with screenshots.
    Have fun.

It's all I use any more. I actually really like the beta 64bit Flash plugin from labs.adobe.com instead of the one that Ubuntu installs, but other than that, I'm a big fan of everything 64bit.

That's all I was running too on my dv5z. I had Vista64 Ultimate installed as well, but booted it a grand total of once after installing it.

You have to use the 64-bit Flash from Adobe although it is a little bit difficult to find. It's not at their 'official download' site. The issue, I think, is that it is/was an Alpha version so it's not 100% declared stable. I haven't had a problem with it yet, knock on wood so that's good. 64-bit Linux seems pretty good now. *Crossing fingers#

I am using 64 bit Ubuntu 8.10 and also love it. Works great on my laptop and desktop. The big thing is that bluetooth is working perfectly for me, my bluetooth mouse syncs perfectly(and automatically) upon reboot! :D Couldn't get that to work with Kubuntu 8.10 or either Ubuntu/Kubuntu 8.04.

Not to mention 32 bit flash and the Nvidia driver were a piece of cake to install. All in all I am staying with 8.10 till it is out of support. It has saved me an enormous amount of config time.
