    Well, after Thomas and a couple other people on this Forum introduced me to Linux, Ubuntu, specifically, I've begun to really like this operating system. However, there are a few things I need help on.

    1. Everytime I resume from Suspend or Hibernate, my screen is white with an active mouse pointer. I have to restart with the physical power button to get back to Ubuntu. How do I fix this?

    2. Where can I get new NVIDIA drivers for Linux?

    3. In GRUB, there is the Ubuntu entry, the Ubuntu (safe) entry, the Ubuntu (memtest) entry, the Vista entry, and my MEDIADIRECT entry. How can I delete certain entries?

    4. How do you create a shared partition for Vista and Linux?

    Thanks,
    Leon

    So you can't fix the suspend/hibernate problem?

    Darn it... So now I can't hibernate or suspend.

    For some systems there is just nothing that can be done. However, for many systems hibernate and suspend definitely can work if Linux is configured properly. I don't know what Thomas was thinking when he replied to you. Maybe he knows that it can't work on your specific hardware or maybe he just assumed. He's going to have to clarify his position.

    When using an nVidia card on Ubuntu the file /etc/default/acpi-support must be edited so that SAVE_VBE_STATE and POST_VIDEO be set to false:

    SAVE_VBE_STATE=false
    POST_VIDEO=false

    This being said, there is at regression bug in Hardy right now. I have a Compal IFL90 (aka Sager NP2090) on which both suspend and hibernate worked fine since late Feisty and for the whole life of Gutsy (Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 respectively). After the upgrade to Hardy, that functionality crapped out. I've been investigating it and I think someone posted a bug report describing the problem:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/203552

    For a definitive answer on your specific situation you should Google around for Ubuntu users who have put together guides specific for your hardware. It is fairly frequent that Linux users document what they had to do to get Linux to use their hardware. I did just that for my own hardware:

    http://lddubeau.com/avaktavyam/linux-on-a-compal-ifl90/

    Look for something that applies to your situation. I'm sure there's something reliable out there.

    Move your mouse around until it turns into the text cursor than type in your password. I get this problem every thi, but logging in works just fine.

    I'm pretty sure ATi cards can work with the tweak anyways.

    Maybe I'll try them, my boot time like 30 seconds anyway though...
