I installed Ubuntu 11.04 cause I was having some trouble with Mint. It's working well so far, but I have a couple questions. First, I installed Gimp, but for some reason I can't right click on it to add it to the sidebar. I don't be able to move items around in the sidebar. Is there a reason for this? I also can't right click on the top bar to add stuff either. I'd like to add a weather applet and a music one, something like Pan Flute as I don't like having to mouse over the sound icon, but it's a no go so far.

Also I noticed that my little trick for getting rid of tooltips seen here is no longer working. I saw GTK 3.0 in the theme folder. I'm assuming they changed it somehow and that's why it's not working. Can anyone lend a hand? Thanks for any help.

Have you considered upgrading to 11.10? The newer version of Unity they have on it is much better than the version included with 11.04.

If your up for any change, also check out Gnome Shell. It is what Unity seems to be based off of, but is more intuitive than Unity. Gnome shell does support customization of the sidebar.

You should be able to right click/drag something to the unity launcher, and as for weather etc in the top bar, search around for the right extension to install, you won't be simply be able to right click and add stuff.

RE: Gnome 3, it is even less customizable than Unity. If you are looking for the ability to customise, get xfce, kde or a gnome 2 fork (I think some projects are popping up).

I actually am on 11.10, not 11.04, my bad. While I'd like what I want, I'm not into putting too much effort into it.

That's the thing, when Gimp is on the sidebar, I can't right click on it at all, but I will try dragging it over. Thanks for the replies.

I remember reading something about the weather applet being broke, but that might only be for xfce desktop.

To move items around on the side bar, click on an icon and hold for a few seconds. Then it should be free to move. Simple, but not necessarily intuitive.

For some reason it was removed from being integrated into the calendar / clock functions on the top bar. To get it do this:

    sudo apt-get install indicator-weather

Then search for weather in the Dash.

Instructions lifted from the Weather Indicator for Unity page.

One cool thing, it seems to have found where I live without me having to tell it. That's a nice little feature. I wonder if it'll still be there when I log out and back in.

It's funny, but Gimp would not let me stick it in the sidebar at all the first couple times I tried, but the last time for some reason it work. Thanks for the tip on the weather and moving stuff around in the bar. I'll give it a whirl.
