I have done a weeks worth of googling in an attempt to make the backlight keyword work on this. ive researched ACPI as well as the script out there for

    G73 keyboard backlight scripts

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/linux-compatibility-software/451594-asus-rog-g73-ubuntu-2.html

i get this error when i run the script from allurgroceries

    root@jedi-debian:/home/jedi/Desktop# /etc/acpi/asus-kb-brightness-down.sh
cat: /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/leds/asus::kbd_backlight/brightness: No such file or directory
    /etc/acpi/asus-kb-brightness-down.sh: line 4: % 128: syntax error: operand expected (error token is "% 128")
/etc/acpi/asus-kb-brightness-down.sh: line 5: [: -gt: unary operator expected

the problem i THINK is that i dont have /sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/leds/asus::kbd_backlight/brightness?

what can i do about it?

    im running a G53SW-XN1

The SW requires the newer asus-wmi driver. Those scripts are for the older asus-laptop module which uses acpi hotkeys. The ACPI hotkeys just plain don't exist with the SW bios... The last model that used acpi was the JW.

The last time I looked the backlight hotkey handler for asus-wmi didn't work yet and the patches hadn't been pulled into 3.1-rc. I just took another quick look and I couldn't find any update on the status of these patches for 3.1. See: acpi4asus - Bug #159: ASUS G73-SW Keyboard leds are not working. - dev.iksaif.net

This is the thread you need to see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...3-asus-wmi-linux-driver-i-need-your-help.html

    Read it backwards. ;)

Why are you using such an old kernel? :p 2.6.39-rcX is earlier than the kernel your distro shipped with..

There is no need to build a kernel anyway - 11.10 shipped with the patches discussed in that thread above.

You shouldn't be using an older kernel than the distro shipped with. You can use either 3.0.5 or 3.1-rc10 (the latest rc) if you are intent on building your own. I would go with 3.1-rcX if you are going thru the effort, since it may have some updated support for your machine.

    Here's my 3.1-rc10 config: config-3.1.0-rc10.txt

    hahah im such a noob!

"There is no need to build a kernel anyway - 11.10 shipped with the patches discussed in that thread above."

I ran 11.1 and the brightness was not fixed. i updated all my files that is why i tried debian.

i actually like debian a lot more than ubuntu so that is why im trying to make it work!!

now to figure out how to use 3.0.5 kernal for my debian cause it looks like im on 2.6.

how do i get the 3.1 kernal and how do i use your config file if you dont mind

    downloading 3.1.0 rc10 kernals :D

Oh, ok. I figured you were on ubuntu for some reason. Sorry.

To get the latest kernel, you need git installed:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install git-core
Then you can clone the git repo:
    Code:
    git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git
Then move to the linux-2.6 directory, and copy the config into place (it's probably in ~/Downloads):
    Code:
    cd linux-2.6
    cp ~/Downloads/config-3.1.0-rc10.txt .config
Then make oldconfig and build the kernel...
    Code:
    make oldconfig
    time fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers
Before you do all that try booting an older kernel.

You might just have a problem with your /etc/rc.local from the errors, I'm not exactly sure what your previous steps were that got you here.

Anyway 2.6.39-rcX is old... don't use it. ;)

Hm not sure how you got there either

    Try the apt-get -f install

If it wants to rip out anything besides your linux-image-3.1 package then cancel it (say N)

Where did you get that 3.1 kernel package from?

No the config concerns just the kernel build.

It won't affect compiz or anything.

Although I have no idea if the latest nvidia driver works on 3.1-rcX. If you didn't install the proprietary nvidia driver, it'll run fine on nouveau (the default driver).

Your graphics probably won't work on the new kernel until you get the latest installer (285.05.09) from here:
Current NVIDIA Linux graphics driver releases - nV News Forums

I wrote an extensive guide here:

You can hit ctrl+c to cancel the build... it should not be taking that long.

Try it with 8 jobs instead:

    Code:
    time fakeroot make-kpkg -j8 --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers

That's fine, you didn't uninstall your nvidia-glx package like my guide said :p

You don't have to, but on the next upgrade it might break.

Just make sure your nvidia installer is extracted and ready to go after your reboot.

Double posting to get your attention (not supposed to but...)

Crap dude. You can't run linux kernel 3.0 or 3.1 on debian squeeze. Sorry about that.

You either have to upgrade to testing (wheezy) or try another distro.

It's an in-place upgrade to get to wheezy, just edit your /etc/apt/sources.list as root and change everything that says squeeze to wheezy. Then do:
    apt-get update

and if that goes ok you can do the actual upgrade:
    apt-get dist-upgrade

Sorry about that, I should've caught that detail earlier.

Anyway I checked all the git commits for 3.1-rc and there is nothing about asus-wmi or keyboard lights... so while you're better off than before for hardware support, it's not going to fix your main gripe.

If you get on a kernel that's 2.6.39 or newer, you can run this workaround to get the lights on:

You can build it yourself or see the bottom of this post...

    To build it yourself:

Use this tarball for 2.6.39.4 http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.39.4.tar.bz2

You can use my config from 2.6.39 which is here:
    config-3.1.0-rc10.txt

I'm not 100% sure if that will boot either, without adding backports to your sources.list. Try it and if it panics you can install what you need from backports:

    Instructions

    --

There is a .39 kernel in backports anyway here:
Debian -- Details of package linux-image-2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64 in squeeze-backports

So you could start from there if you wanted. Follow the instructions link above and then:
    Code:
    apt-get -t squeeze-backports install linux-image-2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64 linux-headers-2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64

    Hey,

Does anyone have problems with keyboard under Linux?
I am using Gentoo on my G53SW and tried whole bunch of kernels and the laptop PS/2 keyboard is not detected at boot time.
Usually I have to reboot like 10 times till the keyboard is detected, or plug in external USB keyboard.
