The latest Linux driver from ATI is Catalyst 7.11, but there is no official support for the Mobility line.

I'm using SimplyMEPIS, and I need a full 3D Linux driver for my HP 8510p, which has an ATI Mobility HD 2600 GPU. Where can I go, and what can I do?

What about installing Envy? It downloads and configures everything needed for the 7.11 driver. I'm not 100% sure though whether it works for MEPIS, works 100% for Ubuntu and my HD2600 FYI.

I'll give that a try as soon as I can, and then I'll post back.

    Thanks! :)

Yes the RadeonHD drive doesn't support 2D or 3D rendering yet, only basic graphics functions. Enough to change resolution etc.

Unfortunately, ATI has had pretty dismal support under Linux for a number of years. With the opening of their specs and drivers and such, they're getting a lot better, but it'll take a year or more before you start seeing ATI support equivalent to NVIDIA or Intel. I recommend to anyone getting a notebook they may want to run Linux on to get an NVIDIA or Intel video card in it if at all possible.

Because of a persistent screen issue, as well as Linux incompatibility, I'm returning my HP, and buying a more Linux friendly notebook with an NVIDIA GPU. Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Wow....ok. Don't blame you. I have an nvidia cpu and having good success with Xubuntu. On my Acer, I had problems in Sabayon with the ATI card in there (slow under linux)
