Oh god, the updates are downloading painfully slow, ranging anywhere from 76 bits to 50 kb a sec.

is there anyway to make them go faster? maybe a faster mirror or something?

    im using ubuntu.

Are you using the main server? That might slow things down, even if you aren't, changing servers would help (usually). It also depends on how much stress their servers are getting right now but it might just be your connection.

What's your location, who's your ISP, what kind of service do you have and finally do you have any download speed problems with other websites. It may be that the server you are connected to is overloaded. If this problem persists you can change it.

go to system, administration, software sources. look for 'installable from', select 'other', click on 'select best server'. it should find a mirror close to you if for example you inadvertently chose iceland...otherwise, probably not that much faster.

Did you get 8.04.1? It integrates a lot of the updates that have been released since 8.04.

Definitely try a different update server, it really can make a difference. A lot of my server hosts setup their own updates mirrors and they really fly.
