What distro and what architecture are you trying to install?
-
sorry, DOH
I forgot to write it.
Its Ububtu 11.04 64 bit. -
Does memtest show any errors?
Does the same problem occur with a 32bit kernel?
Also try some older kernel! -
I tried latest Mint and tried it in both normal mode and compatability mode.
Here is what happens when I run MEMtest with 4gb installed
I tried memtest with the sticks in one at a time and there is no errors. I reset bios to default as well. -

Are they identical modules and did you try each of them in each slot?
-
yeah I have had them in all manner of configurations.
yes they appear to be indentical. I dont understand how it can be showing in BIOS as 4gb but not let any OS' run? -

Check for a BIOS update on toshiba's support site...
-
Which chipset does that laptop have?
-
none since 2009, Its a discontinued model and I have the latest version.
I'm running out of options. Just gotta suck it up and sell the memory I just bought. I would rather not, plus its annoying not knowing exactly what the cause is!
Im wondering wether its FSB related? I have replaced the CPU and it has increased the FSB from 533 to 800mhz.
here is CPUz link -
before upgrade of RAM
-
The chipset supports the increased FSB and I guess the BIOS does it too but I can't tell for sure.
What is the exact specification of your current RAM and what is the model name of that laptop? -
toshiba equium L350 10L (PSLD2E-003003KS)
Was
type : Intel® Pentium® Dual-Core Processor T2370
clock speed : 1.73 GHz
Front Side Bus : 533 MHz
2nd level cache : 1 MB
Now
T7300
4M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB
The RAM is Strontium 2gb-ddr2-667mhz X2 (currently X1 plus 1X1Gb original stick)
About to try out ultimate boot disc see what I can find. -
According to the laptop's datasheet 2GB RAM is the maximum. This is often simply false, so 3GB will usually work. But it's quite common that the BIOS does not support 4GB.
I know some Fujitsu models have problems with properly addressing the shared video memory when 4GB of RAM are installed. -
that would explain the crash on memtest.
Sugar!
Anyone help with this error?
