That's kind of interesting. Never saw it. More than 50% of the smartphone market owes something to UNIX...the Symbian system is based upon UNIX, and Mac OS X (which will debut in some form or another on the iPhone) is also UNIX.

Yeah, I heard about that a few weeks back.

I think it's pretty cool, but I'm not huge into embedded-type devices.

What I'm worried about is that it will probably never see the light of day in North America, due to its open architechture which would probably make it easy to disable any attempts by providers to lock you into their services.

Yeah, I've been discussing about this over at howardforums.com but the truth is that even though it seems promising and I really like to see it succeed, I've not been impressed with where the project is heading.

I mean, the idea is really great and all, but so far nothing really great to grab the attention of non linux/open source users (a.k.a. the vast majority). :)

This is certainly a big problem here in the USA. Out cell phone providers give us locked phones so we don't change providers, regardless if we are on CDMA or GSM networks.

So i'd agree about this phone and OS never seeing the light of day here...but there is always ordering overseas and using a local provider...there's no rule for GSM providers that say we can't get a foreign phone and start up service.

Well, I'd hope it would have a painfully simple interface...people on the go can't be editing stuff at a command line while driving! If it followed an ultra stripped down edition of Ubuntu then that OS could have a lot of success. People really want to dial a number, check & send email, and surf the web on their smartphones.
