I've read about Edubuntu but haven't seen it in action. Do the educational programs keep kids entertained and learning? Are the programs "scalable" at all as the child grows?

    Any input appreciated.

    Thanks!

I've never tried Edubuntu, unfortunately, but I have used some of the linux *edu groups and they are rather impressive. They're not as fancy as their proprietary counterparts, but we could view that as a plus since the child will be more involved with learning than with shiny pictures and sound effects. :)

Furthermore, just being in a linux environment and using linux tools for research and such will be a great learning experience for any child. :D

P.S. You might want to take a look at the Tux4Kids project to determine just how scalable the programs are. I know that the educational suite has packages for drilling arithmetic, geometry, and general chemistry that should last a while. And for the grown-up kids there's Sokoban, KAtom, and Sudoku in the Games menu.
