Alright, so now that I've picked up a Thinkpad x41 to add to my collection, I'm thinking about picking up an iBook G3(second gen, non clamshell). I was wondering if anyone knows how these babies run with linux, and what distribution supports them the best.
Thanks guys,
Thomas

Gentoo, debian, fedora core... ppc live , Arch..openbsd should work....how much ram will ya have on it by the way? i believe debian has run nicely on those...don't know if you've ever used debian..but here's a lil debian how to : Debian on iBook G3 (May 2001) - Little HowTo
also..a lil googling never hurt anyone
-
I did, I was looking for first hand accounts actually
There seem to be a lot of info but not a lot on newer distributions. -
Being that PowerPC chips aren't really shipped to consumers any more, there aren't a whole lot of newer distributions targeting that architecture. Debian is likely one of your best bets.

yea i know bud..but like pitabread mentioned you wont' find much for newer distros..and with the lack of ram on those puppies that's another thing u have to consider..that's why i asked how much ram u will have on it? i guess u could try a few lightweight distros..trial and error ya know
good luck! -
Those were my thoughts, but It seems Ubuntu has a community ppc edition.
I'm looking at ones With 512mb RAM or more.
-
with that said..u could perhaps check out ubuntu 10.04 on it..not sure how speedy it would be, oh..how are you coming on that relaxos distro..i know u said u may be using that?

Why not run osx, they supported it...
-
Yeah, but a PowerPc port may be a bit to much
I dunno, I'm not sure I'll get one, but hopefully...unless I see a good deal on a dual core machine
I would, and probably will, as a dualboot. Every PC in my house runs Ubuntu(Laptop, Tablet PC, Family Desktop.....mother's phone)

Same here except my old 333mhz imac G3..... working on Osx on that thing...Fun secret
on't tell the people down in the Asus section...but I'm looking for a powermac G5 someday....
You do know that there is a ppc port for lucid right? EDIT:you do.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)
BTW....use the torrent download on that page, the links are kinda broken(They stop downloading at 26mb) -
Hmm. Arch Linux PPC
-
Haha, yeah, I knew, if you try that, please let me know how it goes
Yes, that is an option, and I'm certainly capable of installing it(Ran Arch Linux as my main desktops for quite some time), however seeing as all of my house is under Ubuntu, that is a better option.
