    Hey all,

I want Ubuntu on my flashy new Asus U3gs!!! But I want a virtual machine of windows for things like Visual Studio dev work. Something like virtual box is free and works great, but here is the crux. The copy of vista i got with the laptop will only boot if it is on an asus laptop machine (pops up a dialog if it isn't and tells you to reboot, where it does the same again). And of course the virtual machine is not an Asus laptop so I can't install Vista on it. Anyone know of a work around? Or if I can get a normal copy of Vista that is not only for Asus and use my Key?

Cheers for the help in advance.

I'm sorry to say, but the only recourse might be to purchase a completely new non-OEM copy of Vista.

there is a guide around here somewhere that walks you through getting the actual serial number your copy of vista is using and getting a legal vista install cd, then you could install it using that serial number. The only drawback with this solution: finding the guide might be a bit difficult without a search feature..

    good luck! :D

maybe call MS and get a refund, purchase a retail version. I just plain won't buy OEM OS's....sux big time. I have a retail copy of Vista, and I'll eventually do the same thing and virtualize it that way.

You could also buy a spare install disk from MS for about $10, then you can just install using your serial code.
