Does anyone here run Linux on a mobility X1600 or S96J?

If you do so, do you experience the "grainyness" issue?

We are trying to isolate the problem which may exist on the mobility X1600 card. And may be an issue with Drivers or Windows itself. If the problem appears in Linux it might aswell be a driver issue, if it does not it may be a windows issue. Im going to try Ubuntu tomorrow but im a Linux n00b and not be able to get it to work correctly.

    Thank you!

X1600 only? I have an X1400 in a T60 running Linux and don't have any grainyness. Unfortunately I didn't know to check before I wiped the Windows partition yesterday.

Yes, only the X1600, other graphics cards do not apply.

When you boot up the LiveCD, there should be an "install" icon on the desktop. Click that.

Hmm not sure what's up with yours but I'm running Ubuntu live CD right now on my S96j. Graininess issue is still there.

Just a note, Ubuntu is pretty awesome. I have my wi-fi light on and it was never on for Windows. Probably because I don't have the intel software. All of my buttons on the laptop work fine. Awesome... simply awesome. Except I don't know how to change the native resolution.

system -> preferences -> screen resolution
(sorry for the misuse of null pointers)

You may have to install the fglrx drivers to get further, or you could probably skip that and do the dpkg reconfigure step in this guide. But you probably don't want to be doing that on a live cd, it's a hassle. So you'll have to install it to your hard drive ;)
