Since they took this out of beta, I thought I would try it out. This is actually the first implementation of KDE that I've really liked. Kudos to the Mint team on this one!

Zoid, how does the sound work with that distro? Sound issues seem to be the problems I have the most trouble with now that I've finally got the video drivers and settings of resolutions down. LOL
-
Sound seems to be fine, just like Mint gnome...I'm still trying to believe I'm liking a KDE based distro
-
I'm using Suse 10.3 atm, and there is sound, but too low to really hear it well. I'm too tired to chase down the issue tonight. Took me a while to get the screen resolution right between Ubuntu and an ATI card, and now I just don't have the patience to deal with this. It's too easy to switch to Ubuntu or Windows.
And I was considering a Slackware install . . . LOL
Edit: KDE is installed with this distro and I'm finding that I like it a lot - except for sound! Argh. -
Rob....which distro are you talking about in post 4?
EDIT: Sorry, I guess you're talking about Suse....Rob, I think you really should try Mint KDE CE....just run the live CD and see what you think. They've done a great job with this one so far. It's only going to get better too. -
Just when I'm loving this distro, Kubuntu KDE4. beta is released.....here we go again.....LOL
-
I've got plenty of available space on this machine; I may try a triple boot with Mint. BUT, the last time I tried (I think with Ubuntu/Suse/PCLOS) I hosed everything installed on the drive. LOL -
Hey Rob....Ubuntu is hard to beat....I'm just fickle as hell, and enjoy the adventure of a new linux experience....but, this KDE CE is a keeper...right now I'm downloading Kubuntu Beta KDE4 to see if it can wow me over. lol
-
I'm the same way, Zoid. I like to play with new distros, when I can get the damn things installed. Gentoo was too much, though I did try out the Live CD. Slackware just stumped me from the start - but it's been a while now since I last gave it a real go.
Besides those above, I've also briefly used Sabayon (whoa, the ATI drivers . . .!!), PCLOS 2007 and Fedora (8?) which would not install. Was going to try Knoppix, but somehow managed to download and burn a German version. Well, I've never claimed to be a bright guy. -
Knoppix is a German distro if I remember correctly, but it will still load an English shell or whatnot. At least, the one live version I used was partially in German and partially in English and I just messed with the language settings.
Maybe I ought to try this Mint, I've never used much besides Ubuntu. -
I sure like Mint KDE CE....and I'm a die hard gnome guy....
-
Is Mint a different distro? Sorry if I sound noob but I didn't even know there were different distros of Linux up until a month ago.
-
I heard that Mint was basically a themed Ubuntu, but I stand open to correction...
Edit: Thanks for a helpful post, Baserk! -
Mint is definitely it's own distribution. I mean it's not just a rebranded ubuntu cut and paste like say, Shift Linux seems to be. They have their own update portal in addition to the ubuntu repos. But yes, it's ubuntu/kubuntu down deep. I just tried the Kubuntu KDE4 beta and wanted to keep it soooo bad, but I couldn't find anyway to get online wirelessly. It's looks like they haven't implemented it yet.....?
-
Can you post screenshot of the desktop? Are they using kde4 or 3.5(not sure about the 5)?
-
EDIT: Gladly sticking with Mint KDE CE for now -
We need to start a Linux desktop thread, if there isn't one already that we can revive....

I've never found Mint to be significantly different from Ubuntu. There are some new features showing up that would make things easier for your mom or dad but nothing that would entice anyone who understands synaptic to abandon brown for green.
Ubuntu 8.04 is now up and running on my Compal. So far so good!
I'm shocked that wireless wouldn't work in Kubuntu at this point because they ironed most of that out in 7.10. I'm assuming you downloaded the restricted drivers, etc. I do know that Kubuntu development lags behind Ubuntu so maybe they are catching up with a bug or something. -
-
I noticed in Ubuntu 8.04 that you had to enable wireless in the live cd and then find your network manually.
My guess would be that if that doesn't work, Kubuntu 8.04 would be able to recognize everything during install. If all else failed you could complete the install process and download the proper driver while jacked into your router.
I also noticed that Gutsy and Fiesty worked just fine with the Broadcom chip in my Gateway, but that it reported itself as not enjoying a very good connection for some reason.
Back to Mint, this time KDE CE version
