I have an Intel wifi link 5300 and I wanted to know if it was compatible with Backtrack 3. If it is compatible what drivers would i need?

It is not compatible off the bat, at least not with injection. I have a 5100 and it isn't compatible. However, being that more people have the 5300, many fixes and tutorials have been provided to enable support for the 5300.

That being said, you will not have success using it if you are using a bootable version of backtrack. You will need to use a more permanent partition based installation of backtrack.

For the purposes of.... backtrack functions.... the 5300 won't be that powerful anyway, but injection IS possible with the 5300 if you follow the tutorials. I'm sorry I can't provide links, but at least I can give you hope.

However, I would suggest you just get an external wireless link such as the Alfa Awus036h if you're serious about backtrack 3.

I hate to be the killjoy, but it's against forum rules to discuss the use of programs that are *usually* used for malicious purposes (yes, I know that network admins use them to test the security of the IT infrastructure), such as Kismet, Wireshark, Airsnort, etc.

Though he wasnt asking about in any way, he just wanted to know about a graphics driver. And besides, wireshark can be used by many programmers too if they know what they are doing.

    you mean a network driver

And its not against forum rules to discuss backtrack 3 as far as I can tell. It wasn't designed to be used maliciously and so you can't assume that we're using it in that matter. If that were a valid argument, then we shouldn't be allowed to discuss limewire, mirc, or any torrent programs either.

As long as we don't discuss any questionable uses of it, this thread can stay open. Same way as a thread about hammers would stay open until someone started discussing ways to kill people with them.

I realize you probably already knew this, but backtrack 3 and intel 5110/5300 doesn't work. The only way to do so is to install backtrack on your system and recompile the kernel to a more recent version. Even then, the intel agn cards aren't much for security auditing.

How well does that card work? I've wouldn't mind something like that.

p.s. Security auditing is not illegal, unless you audit someone's network without their permission.

Bungalo Bill, the iwlagn are quite good for it, the range is increadible for a built in card, but of course a alfa will be stronger :), that said the 4965AGN does have a few issues, one being fakeauth and the other deauth, but never mind, I still think RT73 cards work best asides a alfa.

What I really meant to say is, they aren't optimal for security auditing. You're right, they do the job for sure.

Just to let everyone know, My new Hawking adapter, read previously, needs to be adjusted everytime I try to inject. I have to use 'iwconfig rate 1M rausb0' to get it to work. Otherwise this card is excellent and fast. I would recommend it. It doesn't cooperate well on Backtrack 4 beta though.

I had to do the same on my laptop using a bootable CD and my linux instillation. I accidentally changed the password to something random using this code in cmd:
    net user 'username' random
    Don't do it!!!!
