Suggestions? And how does it compare to it's Windows and Mac competition?

I use Adobe Premiere Pro and Ulead Video Studio. Both are great, imo. Sometimes I'm even using both because one offers a feature I need and the other doesn't.
I find Ulead Video Studio easier to use and I have pretty complex video projects with multiple timelines. Premiere Pro can take some time to learn.
I've got friends who swear by Magix.
As for Windows vs. Mac, I don't know. I'm a PC person so no experience there. -

Totally my fault. I saw your title in the "Latest Laptop Discussion" sidebar and didn't even catch that you had posted it in the Linux section. So sorry about that.

Try get-deb.net, there's always good stuff there.

If you're curious about what FOSS video editing software is out there, here's a good list that includes FOSS, as well as commercial software, as well as a good comparison list here. I've only ever used Kino, which worked for me, a little bit like iMovie, at least for DV capture, and is probably a good starting point for beginners. I did install PiTiVi, but didn't really try using it at all.
I think that the bottom line in the FOSS world on video editing, is that there's some promising efforts out there. There's even an Ubuntu distro dedicated to multimedia. But more work needs to be done. There's also a lot of good articles on the subject online for further reading.
Good Luck.. -
You can try Avidemux ( http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/), simple but very effective and easy ti use and quite stable. You can also try VirtuaDub ( http://www.virtualdub.org/). Both are good but they are not as powerful as the Adobe solutions out there.

There is a long guide/thread on Ubuntu Forums dedicated to this subject. It runs through the pros and cons of each available editing program.
