Hey guys, quick question for y'all. I want to run some opensource groupware for my buddies and me. http://www.citadel.org/doku.php/doku.php?id=start

What would be the best distro for a Celeron 500mhz with 512mb ram? I also have a p2 400mhz box. It would be awesome to use both, but I can't lol.

Well, you have a good amount of RAM, so pretty much any newer distro will run. Boot times will be slow though. I had Xubuntu running on my old 500MHz Celeron machine with just 128MB of RAM, and it was pretty good once things got loaded. DSL or some other lightweight distro (and a light 2.4 kernel in general) would be faster. DSL on my Celeron machine was about as fast as Windows on my M90 at a lot of things.

Well, I might have to give ubuntu or xubuntu a go. The machine is going to be running 24/7, so I think it should hold up good. Thanks!

Debian is also good (xubuntu/ubuntu is based off debian)

If you're going to use it as a server, save yourself the resources of running X.

After it's all set up, edit /etc/inittab. Look for "id:5:initdefault:" and change the 5 to 3. Then reboot. It'll come up to a command prompt login screen. If you ever need the gui, just login and then run "startx".
