    I've been playing alot with Feisty since Herd 1 was released, and there is something that I've noticed. Ubuntu and Kubuntu aren't the same "user experience" out of the box, even ignoring the desktop interfacing... Load up a copy of Ubuntu and my windows partitions/drives are already recognized and mounted, but not on the same version of Kubuntu, but if I install ubuntu, and then apt-get kde-desktop or whatever the command was, I have my windows drives already mounted. I'm also noticing some other little strange inconsistencies between the two distro's. Is there some reason for this? Last time I did any checking my windows content had nothing to do with the graphical interface (gnome / kde).

    Anyways, long story short I've been liking KDE (again) since 3.5's performance boost and wanted to play around with it again. I'm finding these little anomalies are rather stupid and unnecessary though. Do the two teams not keep synced on features?

    Either way, I've got to reinstall my Linux OS because I mucked around with it till it broke :), but I'm left with a feeling that I should install Ubuntu first, then pull in the KDE love..

    Well, it could be the fact that you're using a pre-release version.

    There are some differences in the software sets, and it comes down to what plays nicest with the software already in the system. GIMP might have been nice in Kubuntu, but the GTK libraries would use up too much ram and space on the cd.

    Just before I nuked my Kubuntu install (6.06 w/6.10 kernel) my Windows partition had been automatically loaded at /media/sda1.

    Both teams are working their hardest to provide the best respective user experience. Considering that both of these distros are only single disk, and yet both contain a complete system, is amazing.

    I'm pretty sure mine detected my Windows drive on install, and mounted it alright. I did tweak with it manually because I wanted to install fuse/ntfs-3g so I could do more than read-only access to my Windows files, but I'm almost positive that it worked on boot. I'm sure it's mounting via the UUID (don't have my laptop with me on this business trip), which I'm too lazy to do myself ;)

    @Pitabred
    I'd rather not trust the ntfs support quite yet. That driver is still considered experimental. I think ubuntu had the ntfs drive setup as rw somehow so I actually had to change it to ro instead.

    From what I've seen, ntfs-3g just hit their 1.0 release, which is considered "stable". The only issues are with encrypted or compressed files, and permissions, neither of which I need to worry about. Check the "Quality" link on that page, and see their test methods. I'm not using Linux on an NTFS filesystem, I'm just using it to access my files periodically, and it's very, very stable in that regard.

    A possible reason for the inconsistencies with mounting Windows partitions between Ubuntu and Kubuntu FF may be the time when the Kubuntu devs took their snapshot of the official FF tree... If Windows automounting was broken at that particular time then it would propagate into the Kubuntu build.

    It's all part of the fun of playing with prerelease software. Feel free to submit a bug report.

    It's not really a problem, more of a "is it just me" thing I noticed.. I made up a nice 6.10 kubuntu image and it worked fine.. must have to do with Feisty Herd 5...

    As for NTFS R/W stuff, I've already done this on my system in the past and not had any trouble with it for sharing content on a "common" partition.
