I am considering making a switch to linux and wanted to know, what is the best CAD program for linux, I'm use to using AutoCAD on windows and wanted to know what on linux is good and it's for designing house plans 2D stuff like floor plans and elevations etc. (I'm thinking of using Fedora 11 or OpenSuse 11.1)

I can't answer about the program, but I would look into running the Windows program in a Virtual Machine in Linux now that it supports 3D acceleration....it might be final answer.

There's lots of CAD programs for Linux, many of them GPL. If that page was too noisy there's this one which focuses on what it describes as, 6 of the Best Free Linux CAD Software packages. QCAD (2D) seems to be recognized as easy to use, and comes in both Non-free with limited-time free trial (professional edition), or GPL (community edition). There's also FreeCAD (3D), and even though you didn't ask for it, there's Sweethome 3D for designing home interiors.
Good Luck.. -
Thanks for the links jas, I will check them out.

I can run SolidWorks 2009 in Windows XP under VirtualBox just fine. You should try that out.
