I'm still downloading updates via Steam in Ubuntu, seems to be running fine under Wine 1.0 as I've been on one server already.
Anyway, what are your IGN's for CSS and what server do you recommend?
My IGN: Richard_Cranium
Server: I say Z Z Z Zombiemod....it's so retarded it's funny.....LOL
I thought some of you more frequent players could list a couple of decent servers, and we'd know where to look for others here.
Post on up, and be fragged !![]()
EDIT: I have some tweaking to do....on to Linux Gamers....
-
If anyone has some CSS command launch variables that work good, and would like to share, please post. I'm still tweaking variables as it crashes shortly after I enter a server....i.e. steam et al disappears completely.
-
Me too. I plan on installing Linux on my system tomorrow, and CSS will be my next install immediately after.
In the mean time I'll be googling for some how-to guides. -
You could start by running steam like this or similar (hides all output from wine, thus making games a bit faster)
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam && WINEDEBUG=-all wine steam -applaunch 240

As for your server issue, this is what I found out
# Counter Strike crashes as soon as it starts or you join a game.
You most likely have other program(s) using sound. Run winecfg and select only ALSA sound driver. OSS is not the best choice anymore.
Another possible reason - you have "Steam Community In-Game" enabled. It does not work properly on Wine and causes all games to crash. Please disable it in settings -> In-game tab.

The best way I have found to get apps running in wine is to visit www.winehq.org, then visis their app database appdb.winehq.org. There search for your game, click on it, then you will see some entries such as which distro it works on , what level of performance (paltinum is the best), choose the platinum entry (if available) then click on the "show" button next to it and it will show a howto the individual used as well as known bugs. -
Here's the only guide/how-to that I could find.

i have been out of the Linux loop since playing around with it a lot in 2005 and 2006. has the ventrilo issues been resolved, in that playing counter-strike and using ventrilo does not screw up the sound anymore?
i remember linux used to have issues with mixing two different applications together and producing the proper sound. is this still a persistant problem? -
I did this on my Ubuntu set-up earlier. Just remember you have to use the ALSA sound. And frankly, while it runs it runs quite crappily compared to XP or Vista so I ended up just keeping my Vista partition just for this.
-
I'm checking all these out now....blackbird, I had system sounds on...I have a launch command 'similar' to yours, but I'll re-look at that. thanks to one and all.
-
theZoid, please post back when you get everything working and let us know how you did it so that we can run CSS in Linux too!
-
Jeez, years ago I ran UT in Libranet with a Loki Installer and it worked fine....let me try at it for a while
Edit, slapped a server recommendation in my first post, from Vista....LOL
-
I'd have a game with you guys, provided you could find a decent west coast server.
-
As soon as theZoid and me get up and running lets do it!
-
CSS is running now...I've only played a couple of maps, but here is what I'm running that works for me:
Launch Command: WINEDEBUG=fixme-all wine C:/Program\ Files/Valve/Steam/steam.exe -fullscreen\ -width 1680 -height 1050 -applaunch 240\ -heapsize 1000000\ -dxlevel 81
I read with Wine 1.0 I had to force DX8.1, and I allocated a 1 gig of memory.
In Winecfg:
Under applications, I added 'steam' to run under Vista. (Per linux-gamers.net I think)
I've chosen Vista as the default emulation also.
Sound, I use Alsa....nothing else is checked.
Window managers I left to defaults.
I've only run a couple of maps, but the framerate seems to be high with my card and those settings. It seems to run fine, there's no color washout like I had with UT back in the Libranet days.
Can anyone add any wine registry tweaks, etc to this?
Now to add a launcher to my panel for this.
I've been in Z Z Z Zombiemod, btw, as yes, you got it, Richard_Cranium
EDIT: I'm getting some crashes now....where the sound repeats itself, locks then the whole games dies.....I'll keep looking, but I'm making progress.
First thing I've done is update to wine 1.1...had so many distro's, forgot what I've added to sources.... http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb -

You're a real trooper man!
-
haha....I could do it in Vista, but I just refuse to ! lol
-
I've decided to set up a dual boot, I got rid of Vista, installed my good ol' XP Pro, and now I'm going to install Kubuntu as well. So I'll be playing CSS in XP until I get it all sorted out in Linux.
-
Damn I want CSS..
Gonna buy it ASAP. -
Do it Thomas, it's awesome, and we can all play together on the same team; co-op.
-
hehe, you should play Combat Arms
-
That's all Windows is really good for....game we must at all costs...I'm going to seek out a couple of "CSS plays flawlessly in Linux" people on the net
I can play now, but something is triggering crashes every now and then, thinking audio...back to the saltmines in Google...
-
did you try the fixes i mentioned on the first page of this thread ?
-
I did....I've got it to run a few maps, pretty fast. But I'm getting way too many crashes...I know it's the audio....I'm trying to get up now on Suse 11
-
i just use windows to game lol.... I dont have a dual boot...just one pc with linux and the other with vista.
I also tried to get games running fine in linux, but since most of my games are online punkbuster poses an issue... have to turn down the graphics..etc. So I just play in windows, no hassle, no compromising settings.. it just works -
Yeah, that's the reality of it. I don't have CSS in Vista yet since I did a clean install....
-
Stop wasting time then, just install it in XP or Vista and be done with... I cant believe how much time I used to waste trying to get games to work on Linux...in the end its just not worth it.
-
This is a real bummer guys. I was hoping to be able to just run Linux for everything, but it looks like I'll still need it for gaming.
Well, I guess it's time to enter the world of dual booting.
What about Cedega?
CSS NBR Brawl :-)
