    Not exactly as simple as that. As default ubuntu will install grub to the interior hd, meaning you cannot boot your computer without the external drive plugged in, and you cannot boot from your hd on any other computer. After configuring partitions in the ubuntu installer, click advanced, then change the device for bootloader installation to your external drive.

    1. Install Ubuntu in your external HDD
    2. Then select root partition as the boot files location , this way you can dual boot with windows if you want)
    3. Boot into your os in internal HDD , if its windows vista , just download BCDEdit
    4. In BCDEdit add linux as additional entry and calculate hdd no
