Saw this message on the ubuntu-annouce mailing list for drake+1, codenamed "Edgy Eft"... Looks like they're gonna try some of the more bleeding edge code (xen, xgl/aiglx etc).

The release has moved into beta stage. I am downloading it now to give the live version a try.

    http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.06/ (April 20)

Edit: Tried it. The graphic interface isn't working :( But it boots in safe mode. I still can tell the difference compared to the previous, the new gnome looks nicer. But I still have the same problem as with 5.10. The kernel doesn't support a P4 HT, it heats up more than it should (switching off HT solves the issue)

I used ubuntu 5.10 with a mobile P4 HT for a long time without it overheating. Just download the 686 kernel from Synaptics and then set up cpufreq accordingly

Yup, I know it can be solved by using a different kernel. Let's just say I am lazy and was hoping the new kernel would do it for me :D

Here are my first impressions upon installing "dapper" on my E1505:

The base install makes everything work on default, even the intel pro wireless 3945. Only thing i had to do was install the ATI drivers which was a breeze.

Then i downloaded the 686 kernel (to make use of the dual core cpu's) and found that the wireless didnt work anymore. The fix was easy though, gotta download the restriced modules from synaptics and that's it. Just search for "madwifi" in it and it will appear.

Everything else works to perfection. This version is far prettier than the last one i gotta say.

I haven't had the chance to install it yet. I need a major format, even my windows boot, but a bit busy at the moment and I am working on a paper so I don't want to play around with OSes on my only PC :(

But I ran it in live CD mode and it is really much nicer than 5.10. I also gave Xubuntu a try and that thing looks mighty nice for a light OS. I'll have to try and install it on a pentium 1 to see how well it runs :D

Oh and sound is amazing, no distortion even at its fullest.

And for those of you with a dell, most front buttons work. Volume up, down and mute do. Next and previous song do too, if you configure them in keyboard shortcuts. Play and stop don't seem to work no matter what i do.

I just reformatted my old Latitude C640 to 6.04 from XP. Acutally, it had Win2k a few months ago, then XP, then for a little bit yesterday I upgraded to Vista Beta 2 (but it was way too slow on this old thing), so I did a clean format of Ubuntu. I'm still trying to work out the kinks as it's not reading my hardware specifically. I edited my xconf file last night cause the highest res I could get was 1024x768, and I messed something up, so I was terminal mode there for a while. I have since corrected the problem and have the GUI back, but there's an icon on the panel that says 'Error: Opening the cache (E:Type 'xorg-driver-fglrx' is not known on line 33 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E: The list of sources could not be read.)' Does anyone know what I can do to correct this? Any help would be appreciated. I'm pretty happy so far though.

P.S. Sorry for hijacking the thread... just need some help.

notebook ftw, the error points to your apt sources file. Please copy all the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list file and paste them into a reply box with the CODE tags around them (in advanced reply, the button looks like a #).

You need to delete that last line in your sources.list file, which I've highlighted in red.

Press Alt + F2, then type in what's below in the prompt
    Code:
    gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Enter your password, delete the last line, click Save, then close.

Alternatively you can open gedit from the command line:
Click Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal
    Then type in the following:
    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Enter your password, delete the last line, click Save, then close.

This should get rid of the error, which was being raised by the software package manager.

By the way, that line is the name of the ATI binary driver package. Were you trying to install the ATI binary driver? Your signature shows you have an NVIDIA card; for that you would need the nvidia-glx package. If you need help installing either of these binary drivers let us know. The Ubuntu Binary Driver HOWTOs should be fairly easy to follow, though.

    HTH,
    Chris

My Precison M90 has an nVidia card, but the Latitude C640 that has ubuntu has a Mobility Radeon 7500. I'll try what you said, but I think I need the xorg drivers to make my screen work. I had to edit the xorg.conf file to get the resolution I wanted.

Your Mobility Radeon 7500 is already fully supported by the "ati" driver, including 3d acceleration. :) Don't install the fglrx binary driver for it.

Hmm, Well I'm getting my new Latitude in a week or two (Its supossed to ship next week) and once I get that and transfer all my imortant stuff to that I'm gonna have a perfect linux machine. The system I'm on now is a Dell Inspiron 1100, 2GHz Celeron (yuck...) with integrated graphics and such, pretty basic but it'll do the job for linux. I'm thinking wither the new ubuntu or FC5, I've had more expirience with FC and I like it a lot, is this new release a big step up from the older versions? and is 'Dapper Drake' just the code name for v6.06? Thanks!

Ubuntu 6.06 is a major advance from the previous version. Since Ubuntu is trying to boost their adoption in the business desktop market, this version has had an extra 2 months of polishing and debugging. Also, 6.06 will be supported with security updates, etc for the next 3 years.

I haven't heard of any major issues running Quadros under linux. nVidia is quite intent on capturing a large percentage of the linux 3D workstation market.

I've seen a few things around the net of people having trouble getting Linux to recognize Quadros, though no personal experience. Although there is a website selling an M90 with Linux preloaded on it. It's $6500 though...
