You should try Linux Mint, a distribution based on Ubuntu but even easier.

Could you tell us more about your hardware specs?

I'd have to disagree :D linux mint is good, but ubuntu is superior simply because of the all the support you get w/ it @ ubuntu forums. also, envy has its problems.

Salahb, i would recommend that you give ubuntu a go first, and if you don't like it or if you have problems getting stuff to work, then give linux mint a shot.

I know HP laptops sometimes use Broadcom WiFi cards which have poor Linux support. You can try NDISWrapper which uses the Windows driver, but it adds another layer of complexity.

You can try Ubuntu out with the Live CD. You can try it out for a bit to see if you like it without having to install anything.

I just installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my Compac Presario C700. This being my first real attempt at Linux, I'd have to say I'm pleased ... so far. WIFI required madwifi because the wireless is an Atheros AR5007EG. The complete madwifi information that I followed was here: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/atheros-5007eg-with-madwifi-on-i386-platform.html and it works just fine.

Wait, isn't the C700 Compaq's budget line? What are they doing putting such awesome hardware in?

I have a COMPAQ Presario C700. Windows vista is in Italian, the warranty is for 2 years, is it possible that I could install the English version even if it means losing the warranty or the computer was made not to accept any other windows OS thats in English?

I found that Mandriva 2008.1 Spring works without any changes on the C700. The Atheros ar5007g was detected and working drivers were installed right away. About the only issue was the kernel had to be updated to another kernel (the laptop kernel) in order to detect more than 864mb of RAM (or 800 something) and for it not to take forever in the hardware detection process of the boot sequence.
