Is there any way to get a fluxbox style right click in compiz? I want to try out a compiz only session, but I want a menu for some of my apps/admin stuff on the right click. Is this in any way possible? I like the idea of having eye candy and no bars + less random gnome/kde/whatever apps running all the time.

    Welcome to the club :D

There is an app called compiz-deskmenu that creates a desktop menu that appears at the pointer, just like *box, but I haven't found a way to bind it to a mouse click. Right now, mine is bound to the default "Ctrl + Space" combo.

I prefer to think of myself as dangerously sane.

    ;)

You might want to check out xmodmap and xbindkeys if you're intent on owning a *box-like deskmenu. I'd look into it, but I've lost interest in the matter, since I've decided forego all app menus in favor of the much simpler run dialog. :D

*sigh* I've been looking for one as well since I've tried out Openbox 2 years ago. It's always been a fight between Compiz's completeness and Ob's right-click menu

I'm afraid the problem's not just binding the mouse click to the menu, cuz that wouldn't be good for you. (Imagine having the menu pop up everytime you right-click, anywhere.)

The trick is making it so that the deskmenu comes out when you right-clock on the desktop. And I'm just thinking that that's a bit of a tall order. I wouldn't know where to start.

I've got another idea though. I've been using gnome-panel for monitoring right now, and I notice that the standard gnome deskmenu does appear when I press "Alt + F1", although it's mostly non-functional. We might be able to work around the problem by having nautilus manage the desktop, and get the right-click menu that way. But that's too much gnome integration, I think.

    Well, there's my 2 cents. :D

My plan was to dig through the source code of fluxbox and try to jury rig that into deskmenu.

The trouble is, not having the regular right click options as well. I actually have yet to try it. It's on my todo list.

What are the regular right click options? The compiz menu is only brought up on the desktop. If im in an application, the right click will apply to the app Im using. Is this what you were referring to?

Thanks for the tip, wankel. :D

I should have looked into this more before posting. A quick look on google and some messing with ccsm yields the following solution to our problem:

Firstly, go to ccsm's General Options, then set "Command line 0" in the Commands section to "compiz-deskmenu".

Next, we need to screw with the Viewport Switching plugin a bit. Enable the Viewport Switching plugin, then navigate to the "Desktop-based Viewport Switching" tab.

Disable all the action keys, but set "Initiate plugin action" to "Button3".

Set the "Plugin for initiate action" to "core".

And set "Action name for initiate" to "run_command0_key"

And, presto! You should now have a *box-style deskmenu on compiz. ;)

What about right clicking an icon on the desktop? Does that bring up the right click copy/paste menu?

Once again, I have yet to even install deskmenu.

Sweet. I actually was planning on installing arch to try it out. As of yet, I'm scared. I'm not a total linux noob, but I'm no pro either. I might do it tomorrow. I'm gonna go to my dad's and use his internet. I have a bandwidth cap and I'll end up going over my limit.

I ended up doing the install tonight, but I have to wait til tomorrow to really get going. I did however have problems recognizing my wifi.

"iwlwifi-5000-ucode" does not exist. I see iwlwifi-4 thousand something-ucode in the package install menu. Do I somehow have an old version? I dled this from the download page...

I really am a noob...It's dumb, I can code app's, but I struggle to make a linux box work. I'm sure I'll be ranting and raving about arch soon enough. For now though, I am satisfied with letting it be.

iwlwifi-5000-ucode should appear once you have synced pacman.

    Code:
    # pacman -Sy
On a side note, I've always preferred doing an FTP install because it syncs pacman before running the package install menu, and you'll have to do a full system upgrade anyway if you choose the standard install disk.

well I'm at my dad's....and I forgot to bring an ethernet cable. Oh well...I'm trying to sell this computer anyways. I just wanted to try out arch. I'm probably gonna put it on my new one...if I ever sell this thing. $1000 and no one will buy it.
