I tried installing compiz on my T42 (SXGA+) accroding to:
    http://technowizah.com/2006/10/debian-how-to-aiglx-compiz.html
3d cube etc work, but the right 30% of my screen is dead, windows become unresponsinve there, and when dragged leave a residue: (

I also tried installing beryl according to
    http://jortega.org/2007/05/06/beryl-en-debian-etch/
No effect (I think it rolls back to metacity). I do see the bryl icon on my panel though. But no 3d effects.

    I get this error message:
    Code:
Checking maximum texture size : failed

Root window size (1400/1050) is bigger then maximum texture size (1024x1024)
    This is on debian etch.

Any idea on how to fix this ?

That looks like the graphics card on your laptop is running out of memory. I don't think there's a solution for it, unfortunately. Compiz and Beryl use textures to display windows, and that takes video memory. Your machine is just under-specced to run Beryl or Compiz at full resolution.

Yeah, I have that problem on my old laptop too. The core is physically strong enough to handle Beryl, but as Pita said, I don't think the 32MB of memory the MR7500 has is enough to power the 1400x1050 screen. I've seen people have no issues with 1024x768, so the high resolution of our screens is probably the culprit.

    It Works !!!!!!!!

    3d-cube, wobbly all working great !!! At 1400x1050 :) :) :)
And I've downclocked the CPU to 600Mhz, no problem.
I can play avi files at full screen too.

Although, the media player player (kaffeine) turns blue when video is playing and cube is rotated (but returns on normal when window settles).
    This is awesome. Details in
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=161517

The only thing missing is, I dont know how to change compiz settings. Anyone know how I can change the settings ?

I just recently went working with Compiz on my system and it took me three days solid to get it up and going correctly! I'm running Fedora 7 with GNOME, I'm not sure exactly how this will compare for you then. For me to edit the compiz settings, there is a program under the menu System-> Preferences-> Look & Feel called "compizconfig" that gives you all the options to edit. It's a little confusing though!

You should be able to just go into a terminal and type "compizconfig." If you're using Gnome, you should also be able to press Alt+F2 and type the same thing. Afterwards, I added a custom command icon to my panel for easy access.
