I was wondering if some of the Asus Eee users out there could tell me how well the eyecandy in Compiz-Fusion works with their Eee? I'm a little concerned about how the aged graphics hardware will handle it.
Likewise, has anyone run any of the more popular 2D and 3D games? I know that the EEE uses shared Intel graphics, but how much memory can it request for graphics use? This will help me to decide if a 2gb upgrade is worth it or not.
Is there anything else I should know about "advanced" use of an Eee? Thank you all in advance!

I know for a fact that an EEE can indeed handle Compiz Fusion. I'd suggest 1GB of RAM for it to work (and not gimp your performance if you enable every single setting) though. The only major problem (IMHO) that you'll be encountering is that the screen resolution is small and the settings dialogue boxes are kinda big - you'll find yourself hitting "Tab" to move between fields (and space to select/deselect, of course). From my experience, the cube is unstable - it caused Beryl/Compiz-Fusion to crash if you fiddle with it unnecessarily. So it runs for sure, but you probably want to hold back on not forcing too many effects.
I don't know much about gaming - I tried wolfenstein enemy territory. It starts up but because of the resolution couldn't really do much (which also meant I couldn't start a game). I don't have an external monitor to plug it into so I can't tell you how much it can do. Never got around to faffing with Wine (too lazy)
If you want to get a fresh OS (Linux Mint 4.0) on it, here's a guide. (Self-promotion ftw)

Neat guide, and good to know! Its too bad that we have to use ndiswrapper for wireless drivers. Wasn't Asus going to open up the GPLed modifications to the wireless driver that Xandros is using?

I wouldn't know about that ; ;
