Based on all the great screen shots on the "Post Your Screen shots" thread, I see everyone has really cool Conky setups. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 on my Dell Latitude & installed "conky" and my system however I wanted to know how to get a nice flashy looking conky that comes up at startup like everyone has. Is there a setup guide anyone can point me to?

If you are going to use compiz-fusion than you will need to create a bash file.
Open the terminal and do the following:
-
I am just using Compiz - I don't think that is the same as Comiz-Fusion, right? I am checking out the suggested links above now and see what I can manage.
Thanks all.
I am from Miami Beach (North Cuba) and never want to go back... -
If you are using Ubuntu 8.04, chances are that you are using compiz-fusion. Unless you removed compiz-fusion and install regular compiz (compiz-fusion are install by default ever since 7.10).
The step above are highly recommended to have conky to startup automatically if you are using gnome and compiz-fusion. If you go to System>Preference>Sessions>Add tab and only put "conky" in the command field. Conky may be loaded as a separate window that stay above any other window unless its restarted. This is cause by compiz-fusion setting that happen to load after conky have been initiated.
If the command line scare you, you can still do the same steps by opening your usual text-editor and save the file in you home directory. -
Thanks. I had no idea Compiz Fusion was not a replacement for Compiz. I created the bash script above using VI since I don't have or like "Gedit" installed. I then saved the script and then added it to start up so the delay should work. Now I just need to find a conkyrc file that I like.
Do you know where I can find some nice application bar launchers for Gnome? -
You mean the dock as shown in mac osx? Avant Window Navigator is the one I use and is officially in the repository. To autostart this program, you only need avant-window-navigator in the command field
.
Here the default conky's script found using this command to extract:
zcat /usr/share/doc/conky/examples/conkyrc.sample.gz > ~/.conkyrc
or copy and paste the one below (the same file as above).

Yes, if you're using gnome, AWN is in the repo's for a dock.
-
Thanks. I was looking for something like AWN and it works fine. I installed it using terminal / apt-get.
I am a little confused however since I have it up & running, it appears to only show active windows I have open. Like a window list bar. How do I use it as a launcher for applications I commonly use rather than apps I already have running? -
Simply, click and drag every program you want from Application to the dock. Another way to do this is to add them manually through awn-manager in the launcher tab.
