Hi there,
I'm a very recent Ubuntu converter. I've installed ubuntu 8.04 and still find the installation process and the use of the terminal a bit jarring. I've been doing alright, but I've run into a problem with not being able to change the contrast. The whites are FAR to right and really hurt my eyes, the brightness is already almost at the half way point.
Any help would be great. I'm not very tech savy so please let me know if anymore information is needed. I'm using a x300 64mb ATI GPU.

Below is what I use. There must be a similar ATI tool available. Check Applicatiions, Add/Remove.

No there isn't ;( Your screenshot is apparently from nvidia-settings. Well, NVidia lets you adjust contrast programmatically, ATI doesn't. NVidia really shines when it comes to Linux video drivers. ATI sucks so much in that department, but they too are getting better.
me12345: try opening a terminal and paste this command and see if it gets better:
xgamma -rgamma 0.75 -ggamma 0.75 -bgamma 0.75
That won't affect contrast, but may help your eyes.
Another option is to use http://ddccontrol.sourceforge.net/ There's a slim chance it will work with new hardware. -
Thank you guys so much for the replies! Icewalker, I'll be sure to give those two ideas a try! Also if you don't mind terribly, cacn you post the original xgamma values so I can go back and forth between to two, to see if there is a viable change? (I'm guessing the value is 1.00?)
I'll prb. have some more questions sooner or later. Loving Ubuntu so far, even if the learning curve is a lot steeper than what my friend lead me to believe. -
Just run xgamma in a terminal before you change the RGB values, and it will print the current settings. Yeah, it should be 1.00.
