I have a Sony Vaio FJ270, model PCG 7K1L, running 2gb 667mhz ram, and a Pentium M 740 Pin-modded to run at 2.4ghz. I guess I should have thought harder about doing that, because to run at any extended length of time my cpu has to be Undervolted. Not a big deal with windows, but it looks a bit beyond my linux skills. I have a verified to work grid for this cpu/laptop that I run with.
What I would like to know is what do you guys suggest I do? I'm going with Unbuntu ver 8.10, unless there is a better choice for undervolting compatibility, but my reasoning is Unbuntu seems to be marketed to be the easiest to get into for a little experience user. I've only worked with Redhat linux, not sure which version, I had root privledges, but I didn't get much experience with the progam. Another big help would someone linking me to a place to get um, the equivilent of drivers, so that I can get my Vaio working tip-top. I have read that the Vaio Fj170 has been a verified machine on unbuntu forums, but not sure where to get platforum specific info. Thank you.
I've read the Linux switchers guide, taken a few which version tests, and I read a bunch of pages on this thread, about using something to undervolt in linux.

Well, most of the drivers in Ubuntu will be auto-detected anyway. The only issue might be the graphics card, where you have to manually install the propriety version. I'm not sure about the undervolting, though.

Ok, Good thing to know, thanks, I guess I'll feel a bit better about it.
Ok, so I have checked my Hash, and burned my CD. I just need to know about undervolting and all set, thanks! -
If you also want to be able to manually control CPU speed, you can try this in terminal:
.. and answer all the questions "yes"
And then on the gnome panel, add CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor applet, which enables you to control the CPU frequency by clicking on it. Usually you'll see four options - Conservative, Ondemand, Performance, Powersave.
It should look something like this

Thank you! I have it slowed down to where it won't melt! All I need now is to be able to adjust voltages/frequency. I know undervolting is more of a windows thing, but I have seen a few people able to do it on Linux. I am running on Unbuntu 8.10 and loving it so far, things are going well. This is my last hurdle before I can get into modifying the OS to my likings. Thanks

I have 3 undervolting links in my bookmarks (saving them for some day when im bored
), so here they are:
http://aldeby.org/blog/index.php/linux-phc-cpu-undervolting.html
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786402
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UndervoltingHowto
I havent actually read through all of these (just a bit to see if they were worth while), so they may be total garbage.
Undervolting requires quite a bit of advanced work so it might take a few hours to do this. (if your lucky) -
I already had my cpu undervolted on windows, and I have a chart of voltages per VID so I'm fine, i think.
Converting Vaio To linux, need help Undervolting
