I know this can be done in Windows, but can this be done in KDE and GNOME? I am getting a high res screen, so if I have trouble seeing the text I would like to have this option. Thanks

if you are referring to text, you can change the font size in your theme settings.

There's not a terribly easy way to change the DPI that I know of, but a quick google found these links:

Great, so there is a way. BTW is it me or does the icons and text look smaller with windows XP then say KDE at the same resolution? I am running on a 1280x1024 17" display and it seems that text feels a bit bigger in Linux than WinXP.

If you want to change the way fonts look in Gnome, go to System>Preferences>Appearances and click on the "Fonts" tab. Take note of the default settings because you may want to get back to them.
