Hi!! I'm trying to install Debian on my DV5T via a netinstall from a USB Drive, but I can't get the ethernet to run and it doesn't detect the Hard drive.

Is there any fix to this or am I forced to use Ubuntu?

Why don't you download and burn a full install disc instead of a netinstall disc and go from there?

If It's Debian stable hand in the bag right now, the kernel is ancient.

What is the wifi chip of the DV5T?

Or are you trying to get wired to work? I recommend you plug it in.

Stick in an Ubuntu or Kubuntu LiveCD and run a terminal (console) AKA command window and type in 'dmesg' then hit enter. That will give you an output of what is loaded at boot.

It's my experience that some distros have some issues when using SATA hard drives so the best solution that I know of is to go into the BIOS and change it to AHCI mode.

Unforunately, you then need a slipstereamed XP/Vista disc if you still need to use Windows. There is a 'how-to' for that, though.

Edit: I just noticed you are using a USB drive for the install. I suggest googling 'installing linux on a usb drive.' Substitute the word 'Ubuntu' or any other distro for 'linux' for specific results.

Gotta thank Thomas. I'm done with Debian. I was really looking forward to it, but nothing good came out. Went with Ubuntu instead, I still need to tune a few things.

    Thanks everyone!!

Try the distrowatch site and stick in a 'sidux' LiveCD. It's based on Debian sid. See if that boots up.

Debian doesn't have an installable LiveCD.

Which ver. of Debian were you trying to use? I would try Debian Lenny and see if that CD would work. You can also try the distro, Mepis, which is based on Debian Lenny. See which one you like and works for you. Ubuntu isn't the only choice, trust me.
