Does anyone know how to get a dell vostro 1500 laptops wireless to work in Ubuntu 10.04? I am using a Dell Wireless 1395 Mini Card.

I installed ndiswrapper-common, ndiswrapper-utils, and ndisgtk from the ubuntu cd. I then downloaded the 1390 driver from the dell site and installed it through Windows Wireless Drivers.

When I ran some sudo command (from the help file) the terminal still says Wireless: Disabled. Although the System tray the Network and Wireless are Enabled.

I have installed Wifi-Radar and that did not work either.

finally I have tried disabling the wireless power management setting in windows and that did not work either.

I do not have access to the internet (Wired, or Wireless) while running Ubuntu. So I have to download everything while on Windows and burn it to a cd.

Lastly, I have never used Ubuntu so I really have no idea what else to do.
I have read forum posts in the Ubuntu forums but they only explain how to fix this issue assuming a wired connection is available.

I've always download the wireless drivers via 'hardware drivers' within the OS. Let Ubuntu search for drivers and you should see the wireless driver there. :)

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll have to dig a little harder because I have no way of accessing the internet while running Ubuntu. :D

That's odd because i've installed Ubuntu, Mint, Kubuntu and Mint KDE on my Vostro 1500 and I was able to connect to the internet via my Ethernet connections.

Are you running off of a router? Hopefully some of the Linux vets can chime in and see why you can't connect via Ethernet because that port is active when booting from the Live CD.

Can you see the network i.e. available wireless routers?

You probably need the Broadcom Linux STA drivers. System->Administration->Hardware Drivers->Broadcom STA Wireless Driver->Activate

He can't get that far because his Ethernet port isn't recognized by Ubuntu.

Actually it's on the standard installer CD/USB:
OP: Make sure you remove ndiswrapper:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove ndiswrapper-common ndiswrapper-utils

Ok I found the and installed the kdms package and bcmwl-kernel-source package.
I got some sort of error message while installing the bcmwl-kernel-source though.

I am going to remove ndiswrapper and see if i can activate the broadcom wireless driver.

If you have access to another computer you can do thumb drive kung fu to get those drivers. See the post on the front page that starts with "danger will robinson"

I linked a site to get the right drivers and quoted the step by step guide to installing them.

Strange that the ethernet port is not working. I have used Ubuntu on mine many times (Inspiron 1520 just different case color) and the ethernet worked on that.
