Ubuntu drivers are packaged with Ubuntu; if you intend to install Ubuntu on the Vostro, the installer should configure itself to use the most suitable drivers. Remember: Linux is not Windows!

I strongly suggest you read the article featured in Bog's signature.

From what I understand, Windows drivers allow access through the kernel interface, while linux kernel modules, the equivalent of Windows drivers, make modifications directly to the kernel, and are essentially disconnected parts of the kernel. Please correct me if I'm wrong or off the mark. :)

Pretty close - close enuff. It's the difference between kernel space and user space as far as where the object executed.

Have you tried installing Ubuntu? If you have, tell us exactly what devices are not working. The Vostro's hardware should be largely standard, but if you don't tell us what the problem is, we can't help you with it.

    ubuntuforums.org is your friend

the sound issue i believe is the sound card, i have that issue with my desktop, although its not really annoying as i just turn off my speakers, so i cant offer a fix unfortunately.

for wifi have you tried multiple SSIDs and routers to make sure its your comp, instead of a wrong key or not being allowed into the network?

you should run the bluetooth programs in a terminal to see the output and see why its not transfering; same with mouse depending on what the issue is. and if your laptop is very new, ubuntu 8.04 does not have the ethernet drivers built in, so you should try 8.10 (its pre-release right now, but even pre-release ubuntu is usually pretty solid.
