Looks like Dell has officially chosen Ubuntu for their Linux option, as requested by popular demand on their IdeaStorm site. New articles below. Expect to see an option to get Ubuntu 7.04 pre-installed on Dell notebooks by the end of May.

I'd expect it to coincide with Santa Rosa to be honest. I'm hoping they'll revamp their Inspiron line for the platform.
-
great... now I'm gonna have to buy a Dell when I replace my notebook just so I can support Linux
"dude, I got a dell!"

wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh Baby Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....
-
seem the total of selling Dell laptop will be increased next few months thanks to Ubuntu
-
Yea and don't forget the OS that will be going out with them
I wonder if they will include full hardware support for like... everything (webcam, fingerprint, reader etc)
-
Definitely some good news! Hopefully other manufacturers follow suit...
-
Its all good until they try wireless support.
-
Yeah, I hope so too, but seeing that the Inspiron line was refreshed last year, I doubt we'll be getting anything structurally new anytime soon.
Actually, the XPS series notebooks are decent looking. The m1210 in specific catches my eye, although its a bit weighty, its a performance beast that competes with 14/15" notebooks.
Why? I don't see Wi-Fi support to be a problem at all. -
Excellent! Two of my three favourite companies coming together in what I hope to be a beautiful partnership! I've been waiting for this.
Well, it's a good thing Dell use wireless cards that work properly. -
It's another good thing if they put in some WIreless that could be used to hack ppl's WEP in 60secs.. Dell - Hacker choice of laptop in the future

Straight from the proverbial horses mouthes. -
Great news! -
They'll probably just offer it on notebooks with the Intel card, which runs perfectly and immediately with Ubuntu. Either that, or they'll start making their wireless cards based on Atheros and include the madwifi driver automatically. Either way, wireless issues should be nonexistent, and any issues will be referred to Canonical, who really know what they're doing; moreso than most Microsoft tech support probably.
The current line has been out longer than that I think. I'm pretty sure it came out in 2005.
I don't like the look of the M1710, but the M1210 is nice. I'm hoping that whatever notebook Asus is making for Dell that comes out in June will a 14" XPS or a good Inspiron. -
When you use the NDISWrapper then their broadcom based cards usually work. Just that they are a pain to install.
Oh and here is more confirmation of this partnership. Go Linux! Go Dell!

Perhaps I was thinking just of the current XPS line then?
-
Here is a review of the Inspiron 6000 from back in June 2005. I think the XPS M170 came out about the same time. But the Latitude and Precision lines were updated last year with the release of Yonah. The XPS M1210 and M2010 also came out last year, so you could be thinking of those.
-
we don't even know what systems they're gonna be offered on, yet. probably not every system.
I wouldn't be surprised if it will be on the business-type models first. -
Reports indicate that they are expected to show up on a Dimension desktop, an XPS desktop, and an e-series Inpsiron laptop. To be honest, many businesses are now consumed with Windows, so it's hard to tell which way they will go with this. Largely, though, I think they will go whichever way their customers want them to go.
-
Hopefully it's the e1405/640m, as that's what I'm looking to purchase soon.
-
I would rather see it on the new Asus-manufactured 14" notebook. The E1405 has a horrid screen from most accounts (as does the D620 unfortunately). Not to mention, I just can't see buying one of the current Inspirons after I already have the M90. The look is just way too boring and is getting old, and I don't even have the white bumpers or faded silver plastic.
