I was replying to 1ceblu3. Red Hat is somewhat low. Besides that, I didn't see anything odd on this list.

Yast is really outdated. I just tried opensuse last week. The package management doesn't even prevent conflicting packages to be installed.

Nothing surprising about this poll. *buntu is gaining new users every year. I'm glad for it, because it sucks new users mostly from MS platform, not from other distros ...
Btw., Their poll is not completely relevant as there is no 'Red Hat' distro in development for couple of years - it broke to Fedora and! RHEL (red hat enterprise linux) so long ago, so that i don't even remember ....
    Btw ...
Zoid, You are such a romantic person .... yeah and me too love your skinny pettie!! :-DDD

Problem with suse initially is you have to grasp the repo's, the correct ones to have, and switch out the system packages, undo a couple of repos, then it all works great,,,multimedia and all. If you don't, some packages will keep changing ownership (conflicts)...but, however, nothing will break nevertheless....it's rock solid. But once you get used to this, it really doesn't require much forethought.

Imho, the best distros are the Debian-based ones. Is it any wonder that there are a lot of derivative ones. I do like Fedora, though. Red Hat does a lot of work that makes it way to the kernel and other contributions. Fedora is different and has problems but it's bleeding edge and therefore, experimental by design. I'm not sure what to make of yum and the updates feature, though. Yet, I usually have one partition with Fedora on my drive.

My top three is 1) Debian 2) Ubuntu (mostly because it's easy for me to go to; and 3) Fedora.

Honorary mention to Mandriva. I haven't used it as an installed system, yet, though. It receives no love. I think it's miles better than the overhyped OpenSUSE. Open? Yeah, right. It's a business distro and has a connection to Microsoft. I do hope if Novell sells, it's not to Mr.Gates' team.

Mandriva is absolutely wonderful until you try to install something or update something. After that it's absolute hell. Also the default application list sucks, OpenSuSE is miles ahead of it. So is Fedora.

I tried Mandriva and OpenSUSE on my old laptop not too long ago. Everything worked out of the box with Mandriva. When I tried to do the same in OpenSUSE with 3D on, I got a hard crash and a black screen. Me thinks it's way overated and your enthusiasm is proof. They use a lot of marketing and investment yet a company that probably has less than half the resources (Mandriva) seems no worse and probably in many cases, better. Relatively speaking...

    Hehe ;)
The thing is we have actually tried both of these distributions and both have a rather extensive list of distributions we have tried. We have both used Mandriva, and we have both used OpenSuSE(theZoid uses it currently in fact). I loved Mandriva, but the package management is absolute crap, and you can ask others the same question. I also believe theZoid has used Mandriva a few times as well. And one thing you have to get straight is that OpenSuSE *is* a community distribution while Mandriva is...not so much.

That is not a fair comparison. OpenSUSE can pour money into their distro with Novell behind them while Mandriva, while no slouch, doesn't have the same sort of resources. Yet, every review I have read including some that compare the two, end up preferring Mandriva since it doesn't seem as slow or resource-hungry. Yeah, both package managers probably suck but that's because APT is still the best. I didn't mind Yum, though. RPM has caught up but the package managers in rpm-based distros haven't fully.

I am more familiar with apt and Debian so I haven't been distro hopping much. Although, I have Fedora installed on a partition.

Of course it is, I just said it isn't as much as other distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuSE, etc. Mandriva has a much smaller community, and most of it's developers are paid. There is an obvious reason Mandriva is not first or second or even third on distrowatch.

OpenSuSE has very nice package management, I love zypper(and I started with apt on ubuntu), You say it's not a fair comparison but neither is Windows compared to linux - people will do that anyways, it's not excuse. Mandriva is great, don't get me wrong. Just don't expect to be able to install or update anything. I've used every release since 2008.0 and it hasn't improved. APT is hardly the best, it may be the way you are used to, that will always seem better. I'm not saying APT is crap, so don't say I hate APT or whatever.

Ask other users whether they prefer YAST or APT-GET. See what results you get.

I am not interested in the debate, though. I just don't think you'll get a preference for Yast... Of course, YMMV, as everyone has their preferences. Yes, you are right though....FOR ME, I probably prefer it based on my familiarity but I have read of other Linux users who have tried both.

Well yes, everyone has their own opinion and can use what they like ;) But if you knew anything about it, you would know it's not called YAST. ;) Yast may be used as a frontend but the backend is called ZYPPER, just like Synaptic with APT.

I remember Mandriva 2008.0, I really liked it, package management wasn't the best but it worked fine. Since then however Fedora or OpenSuSE pretty much kill Mandriva.

Yeah, I haven't tried PCLOS 2010, but I know 2009 was much better than Mandriva, though I didn't really like it as much as I liked OpenSuSE and Fedora's latest releases.
